Notes:
This is a work of fanfiction, not intended to infringe upon the
rights of Trilogy, MGM, or the Mirish Corporation, or the folks at
Robotica.
RoboRooter is not based on any bot that I have personally seen on the series, but is rather based on my observations of what has succeeded and what has failed in the bots that I have seen. So RoboRooter is my creation (ah for the mechanical skill and knowhow to build it).
In his garage, Ezra squatted next to the small square box. He took out his tool box and flipped the box over carefully.
The box in question was actually one of his secrets. The other guys didn't know he was mechanically inclined, and he intended to keep it that way. But Ezra loved building machines, particularly remote operated devices.
RoboRooter was Ezra's newest design. The 'bot's motion was controlled by a full conveyor belt, with interlocking steel plates, to prevent tearing. And because it was practically the full width of the bot, there was little chance of the conveyor coming off of its tracks. It was powered by a six batteries and a simple motor. Externally, the design was simple. Each side had an angular slope, so that the machine looked rather like a pyramid. All sides also had motion. The right and left sides folded out and lifted up objects which were in the way. The front and back sides pushed down, to lift the bot up if it got in a jam. The bot was also tall enough to clear all of the obstacles. Weighing in at 245 pounds, the bot would not be easily lifted by smaller ones
Ezra finished screwing the frame into place as he righted the bot.
"Well, RoboRooter. Let's see what you can do, shall we?"
Ezra had built a small obstacle course to see how his bot would react to certain surfaces and obstacles. He hoped to audition the bot for "Robotica." Sure, most people preferred Battle Bots, but Ezra liked the format of Robotica better. He understood strategy. And Robotica was all about that.
Ezra picked up the remote driver and gave power to his creation. It moved slowly as he got a feel for the bot's motion. It listed to the left and he had to compensate in the driving. But it had speed. He would learn the bot's quirks and be able to factor them in.
Ezra smiled at his bot. It looked sleek, with its aluminum plated casing. He grinned as it skimmed through the sand without any problems. It easily moved the bricks out of its way. The low frame allowed very few items to get under the bot and trip it up. He hoped the design was sound.
Ezra was still getting the feel of his newly completed bot when he heard the doorbell ring. He frowned as he steered his bot over to the corner of the garage. Ezra took out a box marked "Christmas Decorations" and placed it over RoboRooter. Then he carefully replaced the wood over the obstacle course, and moved the unused ping pong table over the wood.
He called out loudly, "Just a moment" as he walked through the house.
Ezra opened the door and saw Buck standing there. "Hey Ez, what are you up to?" Buck said with a grin.
"Actually, Mr. Wilmington. I was relaxing."
"Yeah? Well, the Rockies are on and you have a big screen TV. I brought beer." Buck walked into the town house and sat on the couch.
"Do come in," Ezra said sarcastically. He actually enjoyed spending time with Buck. And at least he had gotten to drive his bot for a while. Perhaps later he would show Buck his creation.
