A stranger on the road
It was late at night and dark outside. I was driving home from a friend´s Halloween party. Sally, my friend, had been dressed up as a witch and I had been dressed up as Alice from "Alice in Wonderland"
It was five past twelve and there was no signs of life outside my car window, besides the tree´s shadows that danced on the road in the moonlight. Suddenly, I saw a tall, lonely man with a big hat standing by the side of the road. I don´t know why, but I suddenly felt the need to stop and pick him up, even though I knew that it was a stupid idea. I mean, I was all alone and he could be some crazy murderer or rapist, but something inside of me told me that I would be safe with him. So I slowed down and pulled in behind him.
- Where are you heading? I asked him.
- Well, Wonderland of course, he said and smiled. At first I was confused, but then I remembered that I was dressed up as Alice.
- Oh, ha, ha. Then we´re heading for the same destination, I said to him and opened the door for him. He had big, green, sparkly eyes, brown hair, a big green and brown hat with a big pink ribbon raped around it, a purple scarf and a red jacket.
- So, you must be our little Alice then, he said after he had buckled up.
- Yes, I suppose so, I said. And you must be the famous Mad Hatter I presume, I said to him.
- Indeed I am, he said.
We drove in silence for a while, but I could feel his eyes reading me like an opened book. I had never felt so exposed to a stranger before, but then of course he was not a total stranger, he was the Hatter.
Suddenly I felt his mouth close to my ear and my heart started beating faster and harder.
- Do you have any idea why a raven is like a writing desk? He whispered in my ear as a slight chill went down my body. I looked back at him in to his big, green eyes. It felt like there was something in his eyes that was trying to tell me a secret.
I noticed that the car had just stopped and I wondered how long we had just been sitting there, starring at each other.
- Why is a raven like a writing desk Hatter? I whispered to him. He pulled his face closer to mine.
- I have absolutely no idea, he said so quit that I almost didn´t hear him. He was so close to me that I could feel his warm breath against my cheek. I closed my eyes, and our lips touched, and it felt like an electric shock went through my whole body.
- I think I´ve gone mad, he said to me.
- Oh dear, that´s not very good. But I will tell you a little secret, all the best are, I whispered in his ear. And then when I looked up he was gone, and all that remained on his seat was a teaspoon with my name written on it. But the strangest thing was that I never told him my real name.
