I'm the narrator and this is just the prologue..
He had been in the midst of reconstructing his resume when he got the phone call. While he loved working at the hardware store, he needed a job with more stability. Something that challenged him, something that made him feel alive. He hadn't felt that way since graduating from high school…
"Finn… your mother is sick."
With one phone call, it felt like his entire world was crumbling. His mother was the strongest woman he knew. Hell, the strongest person he knew. From the time he was six, he had been convinced that his mother was invincible. But his own personal Superwoman had fallen, and he wasn't sure what to make of it. All he knew for sure was that he needed to be in Lima. He had filled a duffel bag with the bare necessities, scribbled a quick note for Rachel, and was out the door in five minutes flat. Finn wasn't one to think rationally, especially when the time called for rational thinking and a level head. In his mind, there was no time to waste. His mom needed him, and he had always been willing to drop everything for her.
Nothing felt real. It was like the world was moving in painfully slow motion.
By the time he landed, Rachel had called four times. Kurt twice. But he didn't bother calling them back. What was there to say?
Burt and Carole told him together, in the cancer wing of the hospital. She had breast cancer, and they were doing everything they could for her. Carole's face was stained with tears, and he could tell that Burt was just trying to be strong for her. He hugged her close, swallowing the knot in his throat, and whispering in her ear.
"It'll be okay, mom. You can beat this. You're Superwoman.. remember?"
It wasn't until he excused himself to go to the bathroom that he allowed himself to break down. He leaned back against the wall, sinking to the floor. There were so many emotions coursing through him.. tears began to flow freely from his eyes, leaving trails along both cheeks. Finn buried his face in his hands, sobs shaking his entire body. He felt a warm hand on his shoulder; familiar, soft, comforting. And there she was.. more beautiful than ever. A beacon of hope and reassurance. And despite how long it had been since they had seen each other, he found himself leaning into her. Her arms wrapped around him, pressing a soft kiss to the top of his head, whispering soothing phrases and rubbing his back.
Being around Quinn had always been easy for him, natural. And if his mind hadn't been so preoccupied, perhaps he would have picked up on that sooner..
