Now You're Just Somebody that I Used to Know
Throwing his bag down on the dusty carpet of his small apartment bedroom, Akihiko shrugged out of his coat and then sat down on his bed, grabbing a beer from the mini-fridge. He clicked it open and then stared out the window, which was glistening with the fresh, pounding rhythm of raindrops. It was nearly midnight, and the full moon shined brilliantly from its perch from above.
As the rain continued to splatter against the glass, its beat steady, Akihiko went back to a time where the full moon was threatening and a certain group of people were comforting.
Now and then I think of when we were together.
Shining red hair swam through his head. Auburn-brown eyes gazed into his, and a gentle, soft hand caressed his cheek.
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die.
Her perfume filled his nostrils, and her breath grazed his ear.
I told myself that you were right for me.
Their hands were locked together; they were smiling.
But felt so lonely in your company.
He waited with wilting flowers as she finished company business.
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember.
Glaring at the force of the lunar radiance, Akihiko gulped the last of his Miller Light and then put his head back on his pillow, watching the ever-drumming raindrops.
Bum, da dum, bu bum, da dum.
Locked in the proximity of her room and temporary headquarters, Mitsuru rummaged through some papers, her mind wandering as it began to rain. Sighing and setting the papers down, she glanced outside and saw the eerie luminescence of the full moon. With the rain's sound pooling around her, she paused. A familiar urge tugged at the back of her mind.
Looking through a box stored deep underneath her king-sized bed, a red armband fell out, its letters catching in the light of the moon.
You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness.
Silver hair and mournful eyes filled her mind. Anguish poured from his soul, and she was reduced to holding him tight.
Like resignation to the end, always the end.
A large, immortal creature towered above them, and she reached out for his shaking, waiting hand.
So when we found that we could not make sense
She spent five consecutive nights at the firm after graduation.
Well you said that we would still be friends.
He kissed her and half-smiled.
But I'll admit that I was glad it was over.
Mitsuru closed her eyes, listening to the increasing intensity of the rain. She finally opened them and then stared directly at the white, pulsating moon.
Lifting his head, Akihiko was entranced by the shifting of the raindrops. He followed their every move.
But you didn't have to cut me off.
He felt a shiver run through his spine.
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing.
His eyes snapped shut.
I don't even need your love.
Mitsuru turned away from the window.
But you treat me like a stranger and I feel so rough.
She couldn't stop the tear that fell from her right eye.
But you didn't have to stoop so low.
He glanced at his locked text messages that never earned replies.
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number.
She probably did change it.
I don't even need that though; now you're just somebody that I used to know.
Simultaneously, they put their heads down, staring at the ground. Akihiko glanced at his humming alarm clock, and Mitsuru attended to her buzzing pager.
The raindrops raged on, and they both remained silent, hung up on somebody that they used to know.
