My first fanfic ever…let me know what you think! ;)

Lucas Scott was startled away from the book he was reading by the sound of his brother's voice, startled because Nathan wasn't in North Carolina. He was indeed in Oregon, where he was pursuing his dream as a small forward for the Portland Trailblazers. Lucas had turned his television on that evening just to catch the national news, when the commercial came on. Nathan sat in front of the camera and spoke as though he was speaking straight to Lucas.

"I fell in love with my wife Haley when I was sixteen years old. We surprised our small world when we got married before we could vote. Haley has always made me feel like the best version of myself. Yes, we've had problems, like any other couple out there; but we have loved each other so much we got married twice. We were in the midst of our high school graduation when our beautiful son, James Lucas Scott, decided to make his presence known and by the end of the day I was a father. I can't tell you how incredible it is to see your child for the first time…all the hopes and dreams, the love that will never know a limit."

Lucas watched Nathan, emotion playing across his brother's face. Lucas felt the lump forming in his own throat.

"Everything changed for my family two years ago," Nathan continued, a hitch evident in his deep voice. "Haley and Jamie were on there way home from my brother's house when a drunk driver struck them head on. The police said that Haley tried to slow down but the other driver was too quick for her and the impact killed her instantly. My boy held on for another few hours; but we lost him too. Jamie had just turned five years old."

Nathan paused to compose himself and Lucas watched tears streaming down his cheeks. "All I can say is I miss my wife and son more than I can even express. If I had one thing to say to you today it would be to please think twice before you get behind the wheel after you've had even one drink…you never know what it may cost. I lost everything." The camera pulled in, a photo of Haley with her arms wrapped around Jamie while they laughed together was displayed. Lucas knew the photo well, he thumbed through his book and found his bookmark hidden deep within—it was the same photo. Since the funeral Lucas hadn't gone far without that photo or another similar near his person. He'd lost his best friend that terrible day, his sister, and he felt the loss every day, every hour, every minute. The pain he felt was crushing, he had no idea how his brother could bear to go on each day without them both. The screen slowly faded to black and the MADD logo came up for just a moment. Pushing the heel of his palm against his cheek, brushing away the tears that had come he turned the television off, relaxing into the sofa and just stared at the photo in his hands. No one had been the same since that terrible day.
