"Where are we, Doctor?" Rose asked. The Doctor had set the TARDIS to a location, but didn't say where they were going. "Doctor?"
"Well… we are at the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Australia." He said. There were plenty of people around, wearing party hats, laughing, drinking beer, listening to music. It was one big party.
"Ok… when are we?" Rose asked. Australia was right interesting, but it would help to know when.
The Doctor grinned maniacally as he replied. "December 31st, 1999. We're going to welcome in the new millennium."
Rose just beamed. Her and her mum hadn't gone anywhere that year. They just had a party in their flat. Just a few mates around and turned on the telly at midnight to watch the fireworks over the Thames. She was already asleep when midnight rolled around. She couldn't stand the banter and raucous laughter of the drunks in her minuscule living room, so she went to her room and slept, while Mickey, then her best friend, also had enough and curled up in a sleeping bag next to her bed. She could finally celebrate the new millennia the way she wanted.
She flung herself into the Doctors arms. "Thankyou so much." She heard him chuckle.
"Come on! Let's find a good seat!" He cried. They ran, looking around for a clear spot on the grass where they could sit and watch the fireworks coming from the Harbour Bridge.
"Here we are!" The Doctor said. He had spotted a patch of grass big enough for two. There were no drunken people near this spot. Just couples.
"So… Doctor, why Sydney?" Rose asked. They could've gone anywhere. New York, London, Beijing. They all would've had brilliant fireworks.
"Well, everyone here is all excited because, in a few months time, they're hosting the Olympic Games. And since it's the beginning of a new millennium, these games are pretty big. Especially for them. So, they put together a large fireworks display for the New Years. It's massive. You'll enjoy it heaps." He said this quite fast, but Rose was so used to his fast talking, she could understand most of it.
Suddenly, everyone had started counting down.
"10! 9! 8! 7!..."
Rose moved a bit closer to the Doctor.
"5! 4! 3!..."
The Doctor moved closer to Rose.
"2! 1! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!" The air was filled with cheers and horns.
Rose and the Doctor faced each other.
"Happy new year." They both said at the same time. All of the couples around them had started kissing. They both grinned and moved closer to each other.
Their lips locked in a passionate kiss. Neither wanting to be the one to stop the wonderful moment.
They didn't even notice the cracks of the fireworks.
A/N: I didn't celebrate the new Millennia the way I wanted either. Wow... almost a decade ago!
