Little Ruby Rafter, not even one year old yet, had had a very dramatic life, from the very beginning. She was born amidst chaos- a grandmother appearing from nowhere, her sister's boyfriend having health issues, her brother and sister in law having marriage troubles, and her other brother just plain old freaking out. The infant had got used to sleeping through shouts- she was a Rafter, after all. But, what had hit the family the most, in that one year the little girl had been on the earth, was the loss of not one but two family members.
Sammy Rafter had married Ruby's older brother Nathan before she was born- they were married young and were destined to be together forever. Or so they thought. It wasn't long before the honeymoon period was over and they were set out in the real world, the challenges life set them. Although they tried- they tried so hard to make things work- things just weren't right. Sammy had met Ruby, and while she declared her gorgeous, she wasn't going to be there to see her grow up.
Melissa Bannon, on the other hand, was determined to see the little girl grow up. she was there from the beginning, marrying Ruby's older brother Ben. While they had their arguments, life was nothing but a breeze for the couple, and they were determined not to take the wrong road, much like Nathan and Sammy had. But, one tragic night ended it all. Melissa wasn't going to be there to see Ruby grow up.
In the space of twelve months, Ruby Rafter had lost two sisters.
"Ruby", Rachel, the oldest Rafter child and protector of the baby, hiccupped, cradling the little girl in her arms. The night had been nothing but hard for the whole family, and while the blonde had tried to hold it together, she had cracked. "We were best friends, Rubes. The three of us were sisters. Sammy, Mel and I were gonna teach you everything- we were gonna be there for you when you grew up! Now what's gonna happen, Rubes? You won't even remember Mel and Sammy!"
Ruby patted her sister's cheek gently, the wetness of the tears startling her. Looking inquisitively into the older girl's identical eyes, she held the look. And Rachel, wiping away tears, made a promise.
"Rubes, I don't care. We'll always be four sisters, no matter what. I'm just going to have to teach you those things, now".
It was a job she didn't want to have to do alone- but they were sisters, and there were just some things sisters had to do.
