Sleep

(n.) a condition of body and mind such as that which typically recurs for several hours every night, in which the nervous system is relatively inactive, the eyes closed, the postural muscles relaxed, and consciousness practically suspended.

He couldn't fall asleep. He tried, oh Agni he tried, but every time he slipped into the realm of his unconscious mind, bad memories of poor family vacations would jerk him awake. He was the one who suggested the damn summer house as a hideout in the first place. Yet he hasn't been able to get a decent night's sleep. And it showed during next day when he had to train Aang and go about like his nights haven't been suffocating him to the point where he is almost afraid to fall asleep.

Just as he was about to try again at maybe getting a few hours of sleep, he heard the door to his room open with a creak. Before he could even comprehend what he was doing, flames bursted across his palms as he aimed for the silhouette at the door. The light blazing from his hands gave a warm glow to the face that belonged to none other that Katara herself.

"Zuko?" She asked hesitantly, as if uncure of what to do in the current situation - which Zuko knew was a complete lie.

"What are you doing? It's the middle of the night." He asked, dimming the fire on his skin.

"I - uh - Icouldn'tsleep." She mumbled, looking away as if she was abashed at her words.

"Oh." was all he could come up with. That's it? 'Oh'? Zuko mentally berated himself. A beautiful girl is in your room telling you that she can't sleep and all you have to say is Oh'? No wonder nobody likes you around here.

She looked at him and he watched her chest expand with breath. She seemed to steel herself for whatever was going to happen next. "I can't sleep because this place gives me chills at night." She slowly made her way over to the side of his bed and sat down at the edge, never once breaking eye contact. He could see the uneasiness along with the uncertainty in her eyes.

"If it makes you feel any better, I can't fall asleep either." After a moment on insanity, he added, "You can stay here if you want."

Maybe it was the way he said it or maybe she was too tired to think clearly, but she accepted his invitation. The waterbender removed the blanket and slipped in next to him. She turned towards him and shifted closer. She draped her hand across his bare chest and Zuko felt something in his chest stutter. Her head found itself positioned at the crook of his neck. Her breathing patterns turned even and deep and the firebender realized the the girl next to him had fallen asleep. Zuko smiled at he felt himself drifting off to sleep with the thought of the water tribe girl in his arms.
