A/N: This is a scene taken from the Kissyfur pilot "Bear Roots." It's the one scene in the entire episode where Gus appears to really be thinking about something.
Gus sat on the log, chin in his paws, watching as Kissyfur slept. The bear cub stretched, curling up on his side, resting his head on the log. Gus smiled, then looked around, his smile slowly fading.
Although the meadow was beautiful, with beautiful bright flowers everywhere and a rushing waterfall behind him, it wasn't home. It wasn't the circus, the life he had left behind. He didn't regret leaving the circus…he blinked, looking at a butterfly that had landed on Kissyfur's nose. "Was it really just last night that we were washed up from the river?" He wondered aloud. He shook his head, attempting to dislodge the memory.
"Don't do it Gus!"
"Yeah, it's a jungle out there!"
"So long fellas!" Before he could move, a rope was thrust around him and Kissyfur. The cub clinging to his neck, he fought off the rope, jumping into the river without a second thought.
The pair had been jostled and thrown against the rocks in the river for what felt like hours. Finally they had somehow found themselves washed ashore, bruised and exhausted.
Now, here they were. They had searched for a place to call home all morning, but had come up empty. Gus sighed again as Kissyfur twitched in his sleep, obviously dreaming. "Awww, little bear." He walked over, scooping the cub into his arms and sitting back on the log, rocking the cub gently. He smiled as Kissyfur nestled into him.
"How am I ever going to find a home for us Kissyfur?" He looked off into the distance. "Leaving the circus was the right thing; I know it was! It's just…well…your Mother's not here and…I don't know what to do." He sniffed as a single tear slid down his cheek.
Kissyfur twitched as the tear hit his nose. He rubbed it away, then slowly opened his eyes, blinking the sleep away. He rubbed his eyes "Dad?"
Gus sniffed, forcing a smile on his face. "Hey little bear."
Kissyfur yawned. "What's wrong Dad?" He lifted a paw up to Gus's face, gently padding his cheek. "It…it looks like you've been crying."
"Oh. I'm fine Kissyfur. It's just my allergies acting up. That's all."
"Oh. O-okay." Kissyfur turned on his side, nestling into Gus's soft, warm fur. Gus watched the little cub for a few minutes. Kissyfur yawned, then turned slightly. "I…I love you Dad."
Gus swallowed as a fresh stream of tears trickled down his cheeks. "Aw Kissyfur." He drew the cub up to him, wrapping him in a warm hug. "It's going to be alright Kissyfur." He sniffed. "We're going to be alright." He gently placed Kissyfur down on the soft grass before burying his head in his paws, letting the tears fall freely.
A/N 2: In case you're wondering, the rest of the pilot episode has a happy ending. Kissyfur and Gus do find a home. You can probably find the vid on youtube. Again, the title is "Bear Roots."
