The compass, that blasted compass, never seemed to work whenever he needed it to. It swiveled around in circles, almost teasing the poor captain. He placed it on the table and stared at it.

"Aye, ye bloody compass. Why won't you work?" Jack took a swig of rum, still looking at the spinning needle with deep concentration. It only spun faster in response.

"Come on love. Stop spinnin'." Jack grumbled, already feeling slightly intoxicated, but took another swig anyway.

"Jack?" two soft raps hit the door, though Jack didn't look up.

"C'me in." the needle started to slow, how strange…

"Jack, 're you okay? Ye seemed distracted at dinner." You opened his door, poking your head through the crack.

"Mmm."

"Jack, stop lookin' at that blasted compass and pay attention!" you slammed open his door to glare at the startled captain.

'What the…?'

"I'm fine love. Jus' thinkin'."

You sighed heavily and started walking closer to him. "Jack, that compass will work soon. Go t'sleep. You'll need it to be the best captain you can be!" you gave a smile and kissed his cheek before walking out of his room and softly closing the door.

'I-I' His eyes followed you, and then quickly looked down at the compass. 'What I desire most..?'

The needle followed you where ever you went.
