Everyday for thirteen years, Taylor McKessie has woken up at precisely 6:00 am. No earlier, no later. Everyday for thirteen years, she has taken a shower at 6:10 am, her shower being approximately 4 minutes. That is the suggested shower time in The Scientific Journalist.
Everyday for seven years, she has awoken her husband from his slumber at 7:04 am. To wake him, she, first, whispers softly into his ear. 'Chad. Wake up.' After she does this, she lightly shakes him, and he groans. He says, 'Five more minutes.' Taylor has never fallen for this. She gently kisses his lips, a sweet, chaste kiss, and Chad's eyelids will gently open.
She'll smile, because she always wins out when it comes to him.
Everyday for two years, she has been prompted by a monitor that her son, Oliver, has awaken. She'll dress her son, and then feed him Cheerios. After a lot of concentration and tugging, she'll wrestle his hair into a tiny ponytail. He's so much like his father it's almost scary; Taylor's been tempted on more than one occasion to shave her son's mini-afro off. She brings up the possibility of getting him a haircut everyday for a year.
And everyday for a year, Chad has said, "Tay, come on! The kid has great hair! Don't shave it off!". Taylor will playfully roll her eyes and send Chad and Oliver off. Chad to basketball practice, Oliver to daycare.
Everyday for two months, Taylor hears the sound of her daughter Grey's crying around 8:00 am. Grey sleeps late because she's up in the middle of the night a lot. Taylor will feed Grey a bottle of Similac, change her diaper, and then dress her.
Everyday for a month, Taylor has been dropping her daughter off at her mother's house, because her mother is the cheapest babysitter that Chad and Taylor could get. And, as an added bonus, her mother enjoys having Grey around.
Taylor McKessie-Danforth's life has been scheduled everyday for thirteen years. Sure, there were those days when she could do whatever she wanted, but Taylor likes to stick to a schedule.
Today, Taylor didn't wake up at 6:00 am. She didn't take a shower at 6:10 am. And she didn't take a four-minute shower.
She didn't wake her husband up at 7:04 am.
But she did smile, because she had gotten her way this morning.
She did not wake her son up, she did not get him dressed, and she did not feed him Cheerios with a sippy cup of Vitamin D milk.
She did not hear the cry of Grey, and she hadn't fed her Similac.
Taylor McKessie-Danforth had woken up at 8:30 this morning. She had stayed in bed with her husband for a good hour and a half, nuzzling his cheek, and kissing his lips.
She had Rocky Road ice cream for breakfast, and a fried Slim Jim sandwich for lunch. She completely disregarded her diet. She put toothpaste on her finger, and used it as a brush. She went over to her best friend Gabriella's house for dinner that night, and they didn't talk about motherhood or work once. They played Trivial Pursuit with Chad and Gabriella's husband, Troy.
She didn't go to bed until 11:30 at night.
Because, you see, everyone needs a vacation. From life. From their children. From reality.
People can't follow a schedule everyday.
