When Jeff walked into support group that day, he expected it to be like any other week. He and 20 other slowly dying kids would sit in the church basement and listen to their annoyingly cheery 'leader' Mr. Shuester would talk about how great life was with a prosthetic arm and how we should live life in the here and now. Jeff would usually sit in the back and make snarky comments with his friend Wes, who was about to go blind. Today, however, his seat was occupied. Sitting in it was a boy. An extraordinary boy, with a small smile on his face, dark hair partially obscuring his eye, and, Jeff couldn't help but notice, a prosthetic leg.
'Alright guys, let's get started. Wes, you wanna introduce your friend?' 'Sure. Guys, this is Nick.' Nick waved awkwardly. 'Hi. My name's Nick Duval. I had osteosarcoma a year ago, but I haven't relapsed. I'm here to support Wes.' Everyone knew Wes would be blind the next time they saw him. It was one of those unavoidable things that no one liked to talk about too much.
Then it was 'Sharing Time', where everyone went around the room and shared what was going on in their lives. When it got to Jeff, he stood up and said 'There will be a time when all of us are dead and all of this will have been for nothing. I mean, can you name 5 people from the 1300's?' No one could, so they sat and let Jeff continue. 'Exactly. And why would anyone remember? We all eventually fade into oblivion and are replaced by different people, none of whom will probably know that any of this existed. and the universe will go on. And if this scares you, just try to forget about it. Like the rest of us.
A stunned silence enveloped the room. Nick smiled and started clapping. 'Damn,' he said, 'That's something else.' After another awkward moment, Mr. Schue cleared his throat and continued his interrogations.
After about 15 more intolerable minutes of this (in which Nick counted that some variation of the word fight was used 36 times), Mr. Schue. read out the long, long list of the formerly living members of the group, which took about 10 more minutes. Then the group stood up and recited the pledge, 'Living in the here and now.' and then went outside to meet there parents.
As Jeff got into his Mom's car, a figure appeared in front of him. Nick. "Hey Jeff, Wes is coming over tomorrow to play video games and I was wondering if you wanted to join us. ' "Sure," Jeff replied, and scribbled down his phone number on a piece of paper. 'Call me later and we can work out the details. See you tomorrow.'
As Jeff drove away, he smiled. Maybe this support group thing wasn't going to be so bad after all.
