Chapter One

I feel his hands on my shoulders comforting me and making me feel safe. Safe from what? I reach my hand back nervously and stroke his face. Whose face though? I start to turn around when I feel the ground give way beneath me.

His hands let go and his voice drifts after me as I fall, "I'll see you soon."

I let out a helpless scream of terror.

I sit up drenched with my own sweat sitting and breathing heavily on my bed, awakened by my own scream.

I fall back onto my pillows and take several deep breaths. Then I look over at my alarm clock and see it's three in the morning.

Getting up I walk shakily over to my dresser and start brushing my blue-black hip length hair. It always calms me. I hear footsteps pounding down the basement stairs and look up into my foster mother, Helen's, hard gray eyes.

She was a small woman with a stern face and severe burnt brown hair. By far the worst foster mother I've ever encountered.

"Why did you just wake me in the middle of the night by screaming? I was having a very pleasant dream. I was terrified. Plus I have to go to work in three hours! You have to go to school in four! What's wrong with you?" She rambled.

I ignored her and went back to combing my hair and gazing into my mirror.

It was my second night here. The second time I've had the dream.

"Look at me when I'm speaking to you!" Helen screeches.

I turn and glare at her. "You know why I've been to so many foster homes?"

Helen raises her nose and says, "Your nothing but trouble. I had my doubts-"

I cut her off before she can get further then say, "Its because I don't care. About anything you say or do."

Helen smiles and laughs wickedly. Wow. "Oh, but you will you little brat. You will." With that she bounces up the stairs and disappears.
