Chapter 1

Tony felt his last breath leave his lungs, his chest slowly burning, his head turning foggy as his body gave up. He couldn't go yet, he had so many things he still had to do. He thought back to the stolen kisses he shared with Steve after the New York incident. Pepper had left him since when she found out and he knew that she would never forgive him, not for something like that. But he couldn't regret what he'd done, not when the feeling still lingered on his lips, not when the words still whispered in his ears.

Three Weeks Ago

"Tony, you know how I feel about you but where I come from they'd throw me into an asylum and try to treat me for it." Steve argued after a long kiss. "I can't get over that fear like a light turning on, it's something I've always been afraid of and I probably always will."

"I know." Tony mumbled, kissing Steve on the cheek again. "I love you." Steve smiled down at Tony, placing a kiss on his forehead. He stayed silent as he left the lab.

Present Day

Steve ran to Tony's side, terrified when he saw how still the man was. He desperately pressed his fingers to Tony's neck, praying that he would find a pulse. The stillness under his fingertips forced tears from Steve's eyes. He immediately began compressions, counting loudly in an effort to stop his shaking. He pushed two breaths past Tony's lips, his chest rising and falling with them. And that was how he carried on for what felt like hours, everything around him moving unnaturally slowly.

Soon two steady hands replaced his, moving faster and with more certainty, while another pair trying to drag him back. There was nothing that he wanted more than for the man in front of him to wake, but he didn't know if that was possible, he couldn't see if it was possible past the rivers streaming down his face. He hadn't cried for a long time, he was the one that held his team together, and now it was falling apart.

"Please" He whispered to Tony, pressing his forehead near the man's ear. "Breathe. Live." His voice grew louder as Tony didn't respond. "God damn it Tony. We need you, I need you." Steve hesitated to say the words he knew he needed to get out. "I love you." The words barely left his lips, but he quickly found the courage to speak louder, to make Tony hear him. "I love you."

A stuttered breath found its way to Steve's ear, Steve quickly looked to see Tony's chest moving, him finally breathing again. Steve reached down and tightly grabbed Tony's hand, ecstatic when he felt his man of iron squeeze back.

"For the record, I said it first." Tony wheezed quietly.
