Summary:
This story takes place like the show but with a major twist, Damon and Elena were never a true couple. And Klaus apparently was a bigger threat to them that what the show ended showing, not even becoming allies at any point. Apparently also there was a slight fact that the show forgot to tell us about the relationship between Damon and Katherine. What if Damon was now a Medical Examiner and had to work with Detective Gilbert undercover? What will the investigation bring to them?

Introduction
EPOV
It has been years since I met him. Since that day I walked to his boarding house and saw him, since that night where we were mysterious strangers and before life changing accidents. A lot has passed in this time and I am sure that there is still more to come. Our lives are complicated but we are drawn to each other, the force being so strong that not even the monster within him can fight it.
-Flashback-
"Where the hell are you going?" As we turn around Stefan is glaring at us and I just playfully elbow Damon letting him know that he should have warned me about Stefan being there.
"We are going to solve a case, why you wanna join us?" Damon replied with a devilish smirk painted on his face.
"And get involved in all your mushy sexual tension work, no thanks, I rather stick needles in my eyes while scarfing down a bottle of tums, since it appears that I was the only one that is rational here." At this remark both Damon and I couldn't help but first gawk but then burst out laughing at his last remark!
"Glad I have monkeys in my face and am able to amuse you two." And with that he stood up
from the table and grabbed his bag, muttering something about going to the university to grade some papers. You see Stefan had decided that he wanted to spend his time teaching college students about science and the importance of research.
As we left the warehouse and headed for the crime scene, I was half listening what he was saying about the case, when I suddenly heard him call my name.
"Elena, are you listening to me?" Damon's voice came to me and disrupted my line of thinking.
"Yeah, of course." was the only thing that could come into my mind.
With a slight grin he just took his eyes of the road to look at me and asked "Then what was I telling you?" At my hesitation and slight blushing he just chuckled and went on to talk about the evidence and the potential perps that Caroline had digged up.
I just couldn't keep my head from wandering how had we became so lucky. Almost half a year ago, we were able to find a cure to vampirism that would allow us to keep some of our best features like strength and super speed, but return to a human life, well not after we had "taken care of" the people that where the heads of the "Eradicate Mystic Falls inhabitants project". After that we all decided to move to New York and our lives became somewhat normal, especially Damon's. We had found that one of the unmarked formulas in crazy Jonathan Gilbert's journals was actually a serum that would allow the vampires that consume them be human but harness the abilities of these magnificent creatures.
Caroline and I had decided that we still needed a little adventure and danger in our lives as well as a way to harness all of our vampire abilities to good use. This meant that we decided that becoming detectives like Caroline's mom would be a great career choice for us. Don't worry I still freelance with some magazines, especially when they require pieces on small town life and founding families. I also still write everything that happens in my diary, that is a habit that I will never be able to break. As for Damon, the idiot was well versed in crime and medicine (who the hell would have thought) and there being an opening for a medical examiner, Damon accepted Captain Bonnie's offer to become the new member of our precinct team. As for Caroline, let's just say that she did find the rock that she wanted, as she now is engaged to a pretty damn successful professor by the name of Stefan.
As for me and Damon...
