He leaned back against the fence, and just looked at the small rectangle of light. It was late, and yet here they were, still up, still … here. He wanted to go in, but he wasn't sure of his welcome. He wanted to be inside, in the light, but sometimes he thought that to try would be to be immediately ejected back out into the dark, and so here he stood, leaning back against the fence, gazing at the rectangle of light, here in the dark.

He had to make up his mind. At some point, he had to act, and maybe tonight was as good a time as any, and yet, even as he had that thought, the small rectangle of light was extinguished. He sagged against the fence. Yet another opportunity lost, another night past without taking the chance to have what he wanted. Yet another day to come where he would be so close, and yet so achingly far from the one he desired. He straightened, and began to walk to his car.

He was still walking to his car, when another light shone out into his darkness. An odd-shaped light that caught his eye as it spilled out onto the night-black grass. He turned back, his stomach clenching in fear at the sudden exposure.

There was silence for a moment, then the man at the door spoke. "You coming in, DiNozzo?"
