Carelessness

Disclaimer-I don't own Vampire Diaries. I am am making no money from writing this. I'm only doing it to stop the plot bunny of doom biting again! Its been stalking my mind for a year. I have some serious scars!

'I just can't take this anymore! Don't you even care about anything?!'

Stephan was livid. Unusual, but his temper had started to wear thin. After three weeks of travelling with his brother, he was beginning to seriously hate him. Didn't he remember Elena? He didn't seem to. He still fed regularly, on any girl he could charm into staying the night with him. He showed no sign of sorrow, of mourning, but seemed instead to be celebrating.

Damon looked up from where his latest catch was slumbering, not at all perturbed by his brothers sudden entrance. He'd probably been expecting it. That would be just like him.

'Why, brother? Does it bother you? You know I've always been … careless.' His eyes glittered maliciously.

'Show some compassion for once! She's been dead for less than a month, and you've gone right back to your constant feeding. On girls, no less!'

'Ah, but little brother, don't you see? I may be careless, but that's how I survive. It gives me hope. But you… you're hopeless.'

Stephan flinched. He turned around swiftly, exiting the room. He didn't want to hear this…this was the conversation that had been hanging in the air since that day. He didn't want to hear this…

His brothers voice followed him, whispered into his mind.

'You're completely hopeless, brother. That's why I have to look after you, make sure you feed at all. You're hopeless…and I'm all you have.'

The projected words bit deep in Stephan's heart. It was true. That was what hurt so much. The casual cruelty was almost more than he could stand, even when thrown carelessly by someone he cared nothing about.

His brother is careless. He is hopeless. And neither one is ever going to change.
