Prologue
L was not one to take anything lying down, for his line of work everything he did served a specific purpose and for that he required of himself to maintain a level of control; in most cases his control was complete. Then there was Kira. He refused to think the cause of any of his cases as an anomaly because for the most part they were all terribly predictable. Kira was not much of an exception but due to the fact his intelligence at times seemed to outmatch his own, L was not entirely sure he would have done anything different were he in the others' position. However his sense of justice was absolute and his mental capacities surpassing those of even the common genius; despite this one thing was disconcertingly certain, he was still very human. His eyes drifted to his counterpart.
Light was, if nothing else, a thorn in his otherwise healthy side. For every conclusion he ever came too Light was the only one to ever bypass it and render it useless in view of the law. Of one thing he was completely sure, Light was Kira, there were no two ways about it. His talk about percentages and a carefully executed phrasing of logic was mainly what kept the young man chained to him and the others of the investigation team on a leash. The situation was less than satisfactory but there was not much he could do about that except look for another opening. Where one would turn up he wasn't entirely sure but there would be one.
"Ryuuzaki, would you kindly stop staring at me." Light said, his voice projecting his irritation. L merely blinked and went back to the sweets in front of him, now pondering the change in Lights eyes. For once he wished it were possible to get directly into his head. He wondered if he should reconsider Near's suggestion.
