THE HUG

"I keep trying to draw something different, but I can't…" Cassie said in exasperation after flicking through page after page of gaudy tigers. "It has something to do with how I die."

"It's a tiger?" Nick joked incredulously, scoffing slightly as he took the black notebook and surveyed the neon drawings.

"I'm serious."

Nick looked back down at Cassie, tears filling her eyes.

"I don't know how I know, but I just know," Cassie choked out, "I know I act like I don't care sometimes… but I don't want to die."

"Cassie," Nick turned back to the page where she had drawn them both dead and ripped the page right down the middle, scrunching up the side of Cassie. "It's not going to happen, okay? Listen to me, you've already done more than enough for everyone, the only thing you've got to worry about is keeping yourself safe."

Cassie blinked, letting a tear cascade down her cheek. "But how?"

"You just start walking. Don't even think about where you're going, just keep moving; don't make any decisions any watcher can track. And when you come across someplace safe, you hide. Simple as that." Nick sounded so definite, and that was what reassured her. "I don't know how but I know this is gonna work out. I promise. No need to be scared, trust me."

Then he smiled at her as she forced one back, "That's more like it."

Cassie took a deep breath and wrapped her arms around Nick's waist, leaning her head against his chest and held on tightly. Surprise didn't stop Nick from wrapping his own arms around Cassie's small frame as he leant his chin on top of her wild hair.

They stayed like that for a few silent seconds, lost in the moment and captivated by each other's warmth.

Cassie then loosened her grip and stepped backwards as Nick handed the notebook back to her. She looked down at the drawing that remained of Nick and stroked it lightly with her thumb.

And with that, he began walking away.

"What are you going to do?" Cassie called out, her voice still shaking.

"I can't tell you," Nick smiled lightly as he advanced into the night.
