The day was beautiful. The air was crisp and clean. The sun was shining. It was the perfect day for a drive. I reclined my seat back until I had enough room to put my feet on my dash. I looked over to my best friend Jacob. His head was rocking back and forth to the music that was playing on the radio. The wind whipped his hair into his mouth and he chocked back on it a little bit. I laughed and turned my attention to the sky. It was the perfect shade of blue. I closed my eyes and let my mind wander. I felt the car slow down and I sat up and looked around. The surroundings looked somewhat familiar, but I just couldn't put my finger on it. The opening melody for Stressed out by 21 Pilots rang through his speakers and I couldn't help but sing along. He turned down a winding road and the trees started to thicken around us and the sun hid behind a thick bunch of clouds. I was still trying to figure out what was so familiar about the surroundings when I saw a red mailbox and it all came back to me.
I stopped singing. My heart was beating so fast that I thought it would rip right out of my chest. I started hyperventilating, and it felt like the car was spinning, but I knew that it wasn't. It was just a panic attack.
*flashback*
It was pouring down rain, and Edward pulled into the driveway. I could hardly contain my excitement! He wanted to take me out on a date! Me! I practically giggled as I ran down the stairs almost running into Charlie. "Woah, slow down there." He said putting his arms out as if to steady me. I pushed them back down to his sides and said," I'm fine." "Damn straight you are, and you better still be when you get back here." He replied taking a travel can of mace and putting it into my hand. "Dad, I really don't need this." I said trying to give it back to him. "No, you keep it. You never know who you might run into." He said turning towards the door. "Okay fine. Thank you. I'll call you when I'm on the way home." I said opening up the front door and taking a step onto the front porch. "Be safe." He said as I ran down the walkway and practically jumped into the passenger seat of the car.
I turned and looked into the sparkling green eyes that were sitting next to me. I could stare into them forever. I smiled at him and the look I got in return sent shivers down my spine. It was like he was looking at me as something to eat. I shifted in my seat uneasily and turned my attention to the road ahead of us.
*end of flashback*
I grabbed my water bottle and started sipping on it, stared out the window and tried to concentrate on taking deep breaths. I felt Jakes eyes on me. He reached over and turned down the radio. "What's wrong Bella?" He asked. I shook my head. "Nothing." I replied. He turned the music off and said. "Bullshit. What is it?" I knew that he wasn't going to give up until I gave him an answer. I took a deep breath and said, "It's just that. I have some bad memories around here." I looked over and saw his grip tighten on the steering wheel. "Little bitch boy?" He asked. I knew he was talking about Edward and I just nodded in response.
"Bella, I'm so sorry for what he did to you. If I would have been there I would haveā¦" "I know." I interrupted. "But can we just not talk about this right now? Please? Let's just listen to music and forget that it ever happened." I continued. "If that's what you want." He replied. I reached over, turned on the radio and tuned out everything else, slowly covering up the memories that had been swirling around in my head since the night that it had happened.
