(Author's Note: So I know I should really be working on Wherever You Go, which you should totally check out if you haven't already, but I just HAD to write this the other day! It's kinda short, those who know my writing know I'm better at "kinda short," but I thought it was cute.
Standard disclaimers apply. I own nothing but my own imagination.)
He sat on the edge of his bed, huddled under a blanket, reading by the light of a little lamp on the floor, his crutch propped up against the bedpost. Most of the other boys were out on some shenanigan that evening, but Crutchie had stayed behind, not wanting to hold them up with his limp.
Suddenly, his reading was interrupted by a knock on the door.
"Crutchie? You still in there?" Called Jack, though he really hadn't needed to, because he didn't even give Crutchie a chance to respond before he poked his snow-dusted head in the door.
"Ain't you supposed to be out with the other guys?" Crutchie asked, setting aside his book. He was glad Jack had come back, but he didn't want to be the reason his best friend had missed out on something.
"Well, I was, but I wanted to make sure you was still alright Crutch." He sat on Crutchie's bed and tried to brush the quickly melting snow from his hair and shoulders. "What'cha been up to?"
Crutchie shrugged, "Jus Thinkin' I guess."
"About?" Jack pressed, nudging Crutchie with his shoulder. Crutchie paused for a quick beat before asking Jack the question that he'd been worrying about for quite some time.
"Ya think you'll ever go Jack? To Santa Fe, I mean. Ya really gonna go one day?" He stared at Jack with a wide-eyed intensity, and Jack smiled back at him, mussing his hair affectionately.
"Is that what you was fretting over? Nah, I don't think so; I got too much here in New York I'd miss, kid." Even though Crutchie was 16 years old, he knew Jack still thought of him as his little brother, just a slightly older little brother.
"Like what?" Crutchie pushed, a puzzled expression forming on his face. Jack sighed and ran his hands through his hair,
"I dunno, Crutch, you for one; I couldn't leave for Santa Fe when I got a little brother back in New York, now could I?" Crutchie beamed. "An there's the rest of the boys too. Davey's just starting law school, and there's Les and Romeo an-"
"And Katherine," Crutchie suggested knowingly, and as he said it, Jack's face tinged pink.
"Yeah, there's that..." Crutchie stifled a laugh. He had to admit, it was pretty funny to see Jack getting flustered and embarrassed over a girl, but he backed off.
"Well, I'm glad Jackie. I'd miss you too much if ya left." He was answered with a light punch to the arm.
"Thanks kid. I'd miss you too."
(Thanks so much for reading, and please review! It makes such a difference to hear your opinions on my work, really, it does. And by the way, a new chapter of Wherever You Go should be up this Sunday as per usual.
Much love,
