Dreams
--
Christine awoke with a jolt at what sounded like the gentle swoosh of a cape. Her breathing came out rapid. 'What is happening to me?' she thought.
Christine. She could swear she heard him whisper her name the way he had numerous times before.
She looked over at the balcony and she saw the half mask that had always adorned his face. Pushing the comforter off of her frail body , she walked towards the balcony, as if she was in a trance. I am your angel of music. Come to me angel of music. She could feel his words reverberate through her, shaking her to the very core.
The soft moonlight erased the shadows with its luminous glow. There was only one shadow that the moon could never erase. That shadow, was none other than the shadow which would forever haunt her past. The same shadow that returned to her night, after agonizing night, in her dreams.
She paused when she reached the French doors leading onto the balcony. Should she open the door?
I am your angel of music. Come to me angel of music. His voiced beckoned to her.
Her mind was rational and tried to resist. Her soul, on the other hand, obeyed, and soon she slowly opened the door.
The wind howled through the night, disarraying her already tangled curls.
The sound it made seemed to sound like Erik, finally expressing the pain he had kept tucked safely away for so long.
She looked up at the crescent moon realizing that the moon itself was indeed the half mask she had seen through the doors.
Oh, how she wished things could be different!
She loved Raul with all of her heart. There was no doubt of this in her mind.
Still, she could not help but ponder about all of the recent events and if in the end she took the best course of action.
Was there a more appropriate way to choose Raoul over Erik? Maybe if she would have just told Erik that she loved Raoul they could have stayed friends?
It did not make sense that the man she had feared for such a long period of time was also the man she had come to miss so dearly.
Whether she liked it or not, the visible pain on his face when she left with Raul, would haunt her mind until her dying day.
She looked at the moon again but only saw Erik's face. She turned away shamefully, and went back inside the manor. She walked back to her bed, her feet padding softly on the carpet.
Once tucked under her cozy cotton sheets, she fell asleep while Erik sang to her softly in her dreams.
