-----------------

It was late at night when Gwen stumbled sleepily into the Hub. She blinked tiredly as she looked up.

'Jack?'

Jack was standingin front of Owen's computer. He didn't reply. She made her way to Jack, whose shoulders were shaking. 'Jack?' she repeated. Her tiredness now replaced by persistent curiosity. As she moved closer, she realized he was holding a piece of paper. Why was Jack breathing unevenly? Was Jack… crying?

'Jack, are you alright?' she asked, putting a hand gently on his shoulder.

'I'm fine,' forced out Jack, sounding angry, and slightly scared.

'No your not,' said Gwen firmly. She turned Jack round by the shoulder, and he surprisingly didn't resist. 'Jack?'

His head was hung, and she couldn't see his face. The paper was now scrunched tightly up in his hand.

'Look at me! What's the matter?' He didn't respond. His shoulders were still shaking. Gwen was slightly worried. She had never seen Jack like this before; he was always the strongest one that kept his emotions in check.

Hesitating slightly, she reached out and lifted up his chin. Her gaze was met by the bright blue eyes of a tear stained face.

'What's happened?' She said worriedly.

'I'm so…ugly,' he chocked out through his tears.

'No you not!' Gwen laughed slightly at the absurdness of the statement.

'No, I mean, LOOK!' He said, distressed.

Getting slightly disturbed about the way he was acting, she accepted the screwed-up piece of paper that was thrust into her hand. She undid the paper and stared at it.

It was a print out of information from wikipedia about Captain Jack Harkness.

Wait! … Her Jack Harkness?

'How come we didn't find this before?' she glanced up at Jack, who was still busy drying his tears.

'Read on,' he whispered. And that's what she did, out loud.

'Jack's youthful nickname, "the Face of Boe" (the Boeshane Peninsula being his early home), may indicate that after hundreds of thousands of years of slow aging, Jack becomes the Face of Boe — a disembodied, giant head in a jar… WHAT?'

'It's probably true. I was born in the Boeshane Peninsula, a place outside the milky way.'

'Then you're not human?'

'No, I was human, just not born on earth. By the time I was born, humans had explored more than half of the universe. Look at the picture.'

She did. Just like it said, a large, brown-ish disembodied head with strange tentacles was floating in a giant jar.

'I'm gonna be like that when I'm older!' he sobbed.

'There, there, you'll be fine,' she shushed comfortingly, rapping him in a hug and rocking him gently.

A few minutes later, when Jack had calmed down, he asked an unexpected question. 'Do you think my memory loss this week has something to do with that missing retcon?'

Gwen froze.

'Gwen?'

She just really didn't have the heart to tell him that he'd shown her that exact print out each night in the last 6 days. He was so upset each time he found the information about the Face of Boe; she had to retcon him each time he found out about it again. Well, at least his reaction was better today – the first time he almost tried jumping off the Torchwood tower.

'Gwen?!'

'Errr, I doubt it…'
