"Neil. Please let me in." Christy knocked on the door to where he kept his office and medical supplies. She hadn't seen him four days. Which in most cases wasn't unusual or would create little concern. Now she could only imagine the worse.
"Go away." His voice is grumbled, full of annoyance, but she smiled relived he was able and willing to acknowledge her.
"I'm worried about you."
"I'm fine Ms. Huddleston." He had returned to that, her heart tinges slightly.
"Please Neil I think we shou.." Christy jumped back as he fulfilled her request and yanked the door open. He had been drinking. She tried to not show her disapproval.
"We have nothing to discuss. Now please go home to your fiance`!"
"Neil. David isn't my fiance'." He narrowed his eyes and stared at her.
"What?"
"We aren't engaged. I um…I told him no."
"Well that was stupid." She gasped and leaned forward prodding him in the chest.
"I don't understand you Neil MacNeill! First you lock yourself away like a self-centered child over the mere idea of losing me. And when you learn I didn't accept his proposal you're mad at me?! You can't have it both ways! So which is it?" He had seen outbursts, glimpses of passion time to time from her; never quite like this.
"What exactly is the question?"
"Do you love me?' Christy wasn't sure until it left her lips that was the question. He suddenly couldn't look at her. 'Neil?"
"I shouldn't…"
"Neil.."
"But yes." She gave a gentle laugh.
"Good. Because I love you too. I always have. Even though as you said I shouldn't. I should be happy with David. And I'm sure I could if I tried. But Neil? I only want to let you in my heart." She startled as his finger brushed away a tear she hadn't noticed had fallen.
"I'm not worthy of this. Of you."
"Yes you are.' She leaned up and for the first time kisses him. 'We both are."
