It was a half-thought half-planned idea that never carried through. The ship and all its passengers were safe, all 709 of them, except for the +2 that boarded mid-flight and never finished their journey. Engines roared back to life and its sudden hum and steady vibrations thawed the frozen state of the people who, a moment ago, were certain of their fatal demise. Slowly they moved, a cough here, someone shuffling over, several people standing up and trying to resume a sense of order. In the distance a steward called out a few shaky instructions, trying to regain their composure and restore control. The vessel was moving again.

They had to clear everyone away from the wreckage, away from the damage that had been done to the ship. The hole that had been torn to the side of the ship stood gaping revealing behind it the startling lights of the Ursa Majoris system, its sun shone bright and pulsing orange. The oxygen and UV shields were back online but better safe than sorry. Clear everyone out, get them settle down, fly away, forget it ever happened, move on.

Someone touched him gently on the shoulder. If he acknowledged it he made no visible sign of it. He just continually stared out at the hole at the sun at the ship's debris that now was floating aimlessly in space. Someone was speaking to him, if he heard the words, they fell through him. Something about thanking him for saving everybody and for repairing the ship. Something about how he drove the attackers away. Something about how brave and brilliant he was. Something about losing someone, something about it being a shame. Something struck a chord with him and he rush out to the tear in the ship. To the very edge of it where metal had met deadly stellar beams. He peered out. To see it would have been comical, a large ship sailing through space and a man with his head sticking out from its hull. He could sense the thin fabric of the atmospheric bubble surrounding the ship in front of his face. A few inches further and he would be pulled out and all the life would be taken away from his body.

A few shouts of alarm came behind him. Hands grabbed at him trying to pull him back. But he remained glued to his position despite their efforts. All his focus was now on the ship's debris that they were slowly moving away from. At the center of the debris there she was. Her body lifeless, no doubt she died in the short moments after being sucked out. In her hand she still held the controller and device that was used to stabilize the ship. Not that it mattered he thought. What was the point of saving everyone if she didn't make it? It was wrong but he would willingly sacrifice everyone on board individually and personally if it meant she was safe, if she was alive. That chance is gone now.

And it broke his hearts

And he can't go on

And he won't go on

Not without her.

It was decided and he pushed himself off the edge of the ship, out of the hole, into space, he felt the air leave his lungs in the dark vacuum. He would gasp if he could. His body could withstand many extreme temperatures but these were more than extreme, they were merciless. And he drifted forward slowly. He hoped he would make it to her before his body gave out and his mind reduced itself to a blank mess. He continued to drift, he couldn't push himself forward. He finally reached her. The two bodies collided into each other in the slowest of movements. His life had all but faded away and her eyes stared ahead as his cold lips brushed against her blue ones. In the gloom the stars wept.
