Lights Out
A/N: Okay, so I am still pissed off about some of the turns that HI took and ranted in a note in my last story, Chloe Rising, that I wouldn't write another story about this show. Well, I've changed my mind. Danny's been shortchanged here, and he, more than the rest of them, deserves a story. He gave his life to save Shea and Madison. Therefore, he should be memorialized with his own fanfic. Besides, I really enjoyed writing both my HI fanfics and putting my own spin on HI. Thanks for all of your reviews. Chapter 1
"I'll be back next Saturday, Dad," Danny said as he closed his suitcase. He was still trying to decide if he'd packed enough shorts and tee shirts but he couldn't think with his father yapping at him all morning.
"That's a whole week," his father said as he stood in the doorway of his son's bedroom. "You need to be here working and saving your money so when you go to law school in the fall you'll have something, instead of always running after them rich white folks."
Danny bristled but he didn't comment on what pissed him off. "Dad, Henry's family is not rich. He's not even an island local. Besides, he's my homie. My homeboy."
"I don't care what he is, there's something about that boy I don't like. I don't trust him."
Danny pulled out two more pair of shorts and another set of swim trunks. "Henry always had my back in college. He's good people."
"What about that girl he's marrying? Her family don't care about you."
"Trish is a nice girl, dad, and she loves Henry. I'm going for Henry, not to cozy up to the Wellingtons."
"Just throwing your money away."
"What money?" Danny asked as he stopped moving about the room momentarily to look at is father. "Everything is paid for by the Wellingtons. I told you that already. The only money out of my pocket is the cab fare to the marina, which, by the way, I wouldn't be spending if you dropped me off."
"What about the week you missing out of work?"
Danny sighed loudly. He worked summers at the fish market but had taken the week off and his father just wouldn't let him forget it, especially since he had gotten him the job. He couldn't get away from here fast enough. He grabbed his suitcase and headed out of his bedroom, his father close at his heels. "Henry's my friend, Dad, so I wish you'd stop sweating me."
"Ever since you went off to college, you think you know everything and don't listen to a word I say. There used to be a time when a boy respected his father, did what he was told. No more. That's a thing of the past. Kids today, you get a little education and you think you know everything and your parents don't know nothing."
Hoping his father wouldn't continue to follow him, Danny continued on out the door. "Dad, I do respect you, but you got to let me live my own life."
His father continued on out the door with him. "My father always told me that 'a man who don't respect his father don't have long to live.' "
"I hate it when you talk like that. You're creeping me out."
Those were the last words Danny spoke to his father. The cab pulled up, he got in, and waved goodbye.
Fast Forward
During his struggle with Wakefield at the jail and just before his chest made contact with the message spike on the desk, Danny wished again for the hundredth time since finding out there was a killer on the island that he'd listened to his father. He hoped at least Henry would make it off the island.
Lights out. Fade to black.
