"You've got it bad," Fenneko mumbled, shaking her head.
Haida let out a groan, sliding slightly off the table clutching his bottle of beer.
"Lay off," he grunted.
"Let me rot in my pit."
"I could do that, but then it'd be on me if you go and drown yourself in the rain and wind up in the ER again. I can't trust your judgement."
Haida made an annoyed growl, watching Fenneko just tap at her phone. "So what is it, you think?"
He asked abruptly.
"What is what?"
"Retsuko!" Haida said, waving the bottle dramatically. "What did they guy have that I didn't have?"
Fenneko gave him a look. "He could hold his liquor, for one."
"I'm serious." Haida looked down at the table, his eyes heavy and giving a sigh. "I thought...I thought we had a chance. I knew her better. I mean, I've always been there for her. I'd never do anything to hurt her."
Fenneko stared at him. Her face grew soft.
"Do you think she knows that?" Haida asked, turning to her.
"I'm sure she does," Fenneko assured him. "Listen, Haida. Just relax, ok? Tonight drinks are on me."
As he turned back to his beer, the same thought rolled in her mind.
She was always there for him. Did he know that?
