Poker Face
The sky was covered in clouds, all a dark grey color. Even through the light less world, the bright red bridge could be seen. This is where it all began. Sakura looked up at the darkdarkdark clouds and felt the first drop fall on the bridge of her sharp nose, then another over one of her jade green eyes. Drip. Drip. How she loved the rain. She didn't need to cry, the sky could take care of that for her.
The slight drizzle soon became pouring rain. All the other citizens of Konoha rushed undercover, but she stayed there with a smile on her face. The girl held out her hand, catching the water in her palm. She stared at the water, mesmerized by the pureness. How could it be so clean? Why can't it be tainted like I am?
"Hey Forehead! Get over here! It's cold!" Ino shouted.
Sakura quickly ran over to her friends under the protection of the large trees. Hinata twiddled with her fingers, "A-ano, we were wondering if you w-wanted to go get ramen with us."
Sakura shook her head and declined their offer, "Sorry, I have work at the hospital."
She lied. But none of her friends could tell. Sakura took off after waving a good-bye.
After rounding the corner, she slowed her pace. Sakura kept looking at the grey sky, waiting for the sun to come out again. I wish I could be a cloud, letting the tears flow so easily... Every so often, a villager would pass by and she would smile. It helped her hide the pain, to just cover up every particle of sadness with a smile.
But It was a fake. A cover up for her real feelings. She was a fake.
Smiling for her friends to show she's okay – on the outside at least. She's been known for her good acting, faking happiness wouldn't be hard. But true smiles reach people's eyes. She simply (fake) smiled so widely that she squinted, it was an easy fix.
Sakura made it back to her small apartment after a few minutes. She took off her coat and let it dry before going into the kitchen to search her fridge for leftovers. She grabbed some rice and vegetables, warming them up in the microwave. During the few minutes she was waiting for her food, Sakura started a fire in the fireplace. Right after getting a small flame started, the microwave beeped. Sakura the grabbed a pair of chopsticks and took out her dinner.
She sat in front of the now larger fire and dropped most of her rice inside. An offering to the gods. Please, bring the Sasuke-kun we know back. The flames ate up the grain, smoke going up the chimney. Sakura finished the little bit of food she had left, she wasn't that hungry anyways. It was getting late, her hospital shift was going to start in half an hour. Better get ready...
Sakura wanted the feeling of real happiness back in her heart. With Sasuke gone for four years, she completely forgot what hapiness felt like. Did it fill the gaping hole in her heart? Could it erase all those bad memories? She only hoped that if there were gods, they would help her. Finding happiness alone isn't easy.
Day after day, the acting got easier. It became molded into her, much like a second skin. When ever someone from the rookie 12 passed by, she would wave and smile that fakefakefake smile. Even after months of praying and offerings, she didn't get better.
So, I'm never gonna get my happiness, am I?
"The gods don't exist.
And most dreams will be crushed."
