Zoey's POV [Point of View]

Chapter 1

I awoke with a terrible sense of dread. Something awful had happened, but I couldn't remember what. As I lay there thinking, tears began sliding down my cheeks. Heath. Heath was gone. I can't tell you how long I laid there crying. I couldn't believe it. Heath, the one person who knew me, truly knew me, was gone. I felt like I was falling apart, like the tears weren't just tears but parts of my soul slipping away from me. I forgot about Kalona and Neferet, I forgot about Stevie Rae's secrets; only Heath was in my thoughts. Memories from the childhood we had shared ran through my mind like a movie. I thought about third grade, when he sat with me at lunch when nobody else would. I thought about when he first asked me out.

This wasn't how it was supposed to end. He was supposed to go on to college, with me on the side-lines cheering for him.

Oh goddess, his parents! I though horrified. They'll never forgive me.

It was then that the realization hit me. Heath wouldn't be dead if I hadn't let him come. It was all my fault. If I hadn't been so selfish, Heath would still be alive. He'd be safely at home. He'd be filling out college applications and freaking over his Spanish grades.

A sudden, new kind of sorrow swept through my body. I wailed in agony and sadness. I was on the verge of hysteria. I had finally cracked.

Why? Why did this have to happen!

His choice was his alone.

I came out of my hysteria so fast I almost got dizzy. I hadn't realized that I wasn't alone. I looked around, shocked that I hadn't noticed sooner. I was lying in a beautiful valley. The grass was soft and the meadow smelled wonderfully of lavender, even though there were no lavender plants. The ground was sparkling with dew drops and the night sky was filled with thousands of stars.

My breath caught my throat. In the middle of the sky was the most beautiful view of the moon I had ever seen. It was huge! It shinned almost as bright as the sun. I could see every crater and every mountain. It looked so close I thought I could touch it. As I raised my hand to try I heard the voice again, Nyx's voice.

I whirled around to see her standing in the middle of a small pond. The sky reflected in the water making it seem like she was standing in space. I could sense that she was beautiful, but every time I tried to concentrate on her my eyes would slide off of like butter.
