Looking In
-
He's standing right beside Nick, but he's also standing outside. He can't read his thoughts, even if he knows what the man is thinking. He can't see his eyes, because Nick is not turning to him - but he knows the look in his eyes.
He's far away, even if he's standing right beside him. The thick wall of milk glass between them doesn't allow for touches or even glances, only blurred shapes are visible and the idea of another person in the same room.
And Helen.
She's clearly visible to both of them. She's not looking either, but it's different. She's just ignoring them, Nick doesn't even know that he's there.
He wants to touch his arm and ask him if he's allright - make him aware. He wants to smile, create a place for the two of them somewhere out of Helen's reach - but there is no direction, no islands not a minute where she doesn't know how to get to.
And Nick doesn't even want to flee.
And it feels like no time has passed at all, like those eight years are just a a flower, that's been trampled in the street - not because someone wanted to destroy it, but because no one cared to look at the floor. Like dust, swept aside when someone walks too close by.
The game is still on. And he doesn't know if he's the pawn or the queen.
And it scares him.
It's why, when Helen looks at him, knowingly, smugly, he doesn't look away - at least someone can see him. And he doesn't care what the reasons are. He doesn't want to be alone.
And when she looks away, he turns his head to the wall. Away from Nick.
