An old photograph, a discarded book, and someone's grandmother

Books were not regarded highly in the Dursley home. Harry lay on his bed in the second bedroom, watching as a spider wove its web, attaching a book to the shelf. He swung his legs off his bed and walked over to them. He reached up and ran a finger over their spines, leaving a trail in the dust. He pulled a book down and brought it back to his bed, where he sat with it in his lap. Harry ran his hand over the cover. Its once vibrant cover was muted with age.

It looked like a dull book; the gilded lettering said something about amphibians. He was thumbing through the yellowing pages, when it fell open to a page about the Western Spadefoot. Something was stuck in between the pages. It was and ordinary old Polaroid, but Harry was startled to see it moving.

He was used to moving pictures, they were everywhere at Hogwarts, but the Dursleys hated everything magical and he was surprised to see it in their house. The picture was of a woman and two young girls. He immediately recognized Aunt Petunia's tall neck and pointed face, but her broad, innocent smile was foreign to him. Her blond hair was pulled back and she was missing a tooth.

The other girl looked slightly younger with her dark red hair in pigtails and bright green eyes widened in excitement. She waved up at him, and he almost dropped the photo, this girl was his mother. His gaze lingered on her for awhile before focusing on the middle figure.

He had never seen a picture of his grandmother, Aunt Petunia didn't keep them in the house, but he was certain this woman was her. She had light red hair that was prematurely graying in parts. An arm was wrapped around each of her daughters' shoulders and a wide smile stretched across her thin face. He had never seen a happier family.

Harry took out the old pillowcase where he kept his magical textbooks. It seemed unfair to hide the smiling family, he thought as he placed the picture between the pages of A History Of Magic. He placed the new addition to his treasure in the loose floorboard, and laid back on his bed, staring up at the ceiling. For the first time in his life, it felt like he had a family. He fell asleep with a smile on his face.
