Chapter One:

Rick's POV

Jonathan and I were walking down the halls of the building we were staying at when we ran into Evie who was holding two books in her arms.

"Oh hello, what are you doing walking around the halls?" Evie asked.

"I might ask you the same thing." I said. Then I heard a voice somewhere. "Do you hear that?" We all stayed quiet until we could hear where it was coming from. I went towards it, Evie and Jonathan following behind me.

We came across a temple where there were people old and young praying and some of them singing. But there was a woman in the front of them kneeling at the front of the temple. I was surprised to see a crucifix where she was kneeling. All I saw was the back of her. She had curly black hair that went to her mid back. Looking at her arms that's at her sides, she was tan like any other person here, but her skin had a glow to it.

She wore a white short sleeve blouse that showed her shoulders. A purple skirt that went to her ankles, revealing her barefeet. On her left ankle was a gold anklet with a small ankh attached to it. She wore brown cuffs on both her wrist. I saw that there was a gold colored sash in her hair. There was a small animal next to her, I saw that it was a cheetah cub.

What caught my attention was that she was the one singing with the other people following along with her.

I don't know if You can hear me

Or if You're even there

I don't know if You would listen

To a gypsy's prayer

Yes, I know I'm just an outcast

I shouldn't speak to you

Still I see your face and wonder...

Were you once an outcast too?

God help the outcasts

Hungry from birth

Show them the mercy

They don't find on earth

God help my people

We look to You still

God help the outcasts

Or nobody will

(Parishioners)

I ask for wealth

I ask for fame

I ask for glory to shine on my name

I ask for love I can possess

I ask for God and His angels to bless me

(The woman)

I ask for nothing

I can get by

But I know so many

Less lucky than I

Please help my people

The poor and downtrod

I thought we all were

The children of God

God help the outcasts

Children of God

"She has a beautiful voice." I heard Evie comment.

"Yeah she does." Jonathan said. The woman knelt next to cub and picked it up, holding it as if it were a human baby. Then she turned to walk out the door of the temple, that was when we finally got a glimpse of her face.

She had prominent cheekbones, pink lips with a small pout, emerald green almond shaped eyes, and a chiseled jaw. She was beautiful. She looked to be around twenty one years old.

"You have a beautiful voice." Evie repeated, but this time to the woman.

"Thank you." said the girl in heavily accented English.

"I'm Evelyn, but call me Evie. This is my brother Jonathan and our friend Rick. What is your name?"

"Aaliyah. This is Shameeka." The woman, Aaliyah said referring to the cheetah cub. The cub, Shamika started to make noises, like mewling.

"She is adorable." Evie commented. "Do you mind if I pet her?"

"Of course you may. She's very nice to people." Evie slowly placed her hand on Shamika's head and started to scratch her ear. Shamika started to purr.

"Pardon me, but don't cheetahs live in open plains?" Jonathan asked.

"Yes, they do. But some merchants had Shamika and other wild animals in cages, this was about two weeks ago. I only managed to set Shamika free, the others were sold to rich people. Since then, I never let Shamika go. And she is always by my side." Aaliyah explained.

"Where are you staying, Aaliyah?" Evie asked.

"I mostly just live a nomadic life, after I got separated from my tribe after a bad incident, I just lived on my own until I found Shamika. Why do you ask?" The woman responded.

"Well, if you want, you can stay with me in my room until Rick, Jonathan and I leave." Aaliyah looked to be in thought for a moment, she looked to Shamika who just tilted her head.

"Thank you, I will stay." Evie smiled and put her arm around Aaliyah.

"Come with me," Evie started to lead her. "I'll show you where you'll be staying." Then Evie, Aaliyah, and Shamika were out of eyesight and it was just me and Jonathan standing at the temple entrance.

"Why do you think Evie wanted Aaliyah to stay with her?" I asked him.

"Evie has always sensed something about people, like when they need help, a shoulder to cry on, someone to talk to, or anything along the lines. My guess is that this woman just needs someone to be there for her." I was shocked at Jonathan. "What?" He asked, noticing my shocked expression.

"That was one of the smartest things you've ever said." I said, He rolled his eyes and punched my shoulder lightly. I glared at him and the chase began. Jonathan ran as fast as he could around the halls while I chased after him.

Evie's POV

I led Aaliyah to the room I was staying. She set Shamika down so she could walk on her own. Shamika was a smart cheetah cub, she didn't wander off, only followed us.

"So Aaliyah, what tribe are you from?" I asked. She didn't hesitate to answer.

"I'm a Medjai." I was shocked.

"You are?" She nodded. "It's just that, before we came here, we visited the Medjai tribe. They gave us camels and me fresh clothing."

"Why did you need camels?" Aaliyah asked curiously.

"We were looking for a way to get to Hamunaptra." This made Aaliyah gasp, stiffen, and stop walking. "Aaliyah, what is it? What's wrong?"

"Please tell me the creature is in his sarcophagus." She said shakily.

"I'm sorry to say, he's awake. He already took a man's eyes and tongue." She shivered at the mention and we continued walking.

"May I visit him someday?" She asked curiously. I nodded.

"Of course, some of us help take care of Burns. Oh that's his name by the way, Bernard Burns." I mentioned.

We finally made it to my room and I showed her where she will be sleeping. Luckily there was another bedroom in the hotel room, so she would be sleeping there. My cat and Shamika got along very well. They both curled up on the couch closely together. It was adorable.

"Tomorrow I'll show you where Burns' room is so you can see him. It's getting late, so let's get some rest." I gave her some night clothes to borrow and left her room so she could get changed and rest.

I went to my room and changed into my black night-gown and slid into bed. Soon, sleep came to me and I dreamed about a certain brown eyed man.
