One second Edward and I were standing alone in the clearing, waiting for the battle to end. The next one though I was being pushed backwards by Edward while Victoria and one of her new borns walked out into the clearing. Her red hair danced like fire around her head and her eyes were redder then before. Was that even possible? It took me a minute before I could look away from Victoria to look at the other one. He was beautiful like all vampires. He was almost as beautiful as Edward. Almost. Instead of the pure gold I saw when I looked in Edward's eyes I saw a blood red. The same as James' and Laurant's had been. The same as Victioria's were now. At that moment I heard a growl come from Edward's chest and he sprang. Victoria moved out of the way fast enough but the new born didn't realize what was happening in time and Edward came down on top of him. Edward tore him from limb from limb and threw his remains into a fire. Then he went after Victoria. She was much faster and smarter than her little friend and this battle was more even. They were moving so fast it was making me dizzy to watch, but I couldn't take my eyes off Edward. Victoria came on top of Edward and I heard her laugh shrilly. She was about to lunge her teeth into his neck and rip his head off. I don't know why, but at that moment I thought of the third wife from the story Billy had told at the fire. The one who had taken her life to save the ones she cared for the most. I don't know why I did what I did either. I started looking around until I found a rock sharp enough to do the job.

"Victoria!" I screamed as loud as I could. She paused only a moment but that was all I needed. I plunged the rock into my heart. The last things I saw on earth were Edward's face screaming my name and Victoria tilting her head back and laughing evilly, like the ways you say the bad guys do in movies. My last words were spoken so softly I knew no one with human ears would ever hear me. But Edward's ears weren't human. He heard my final words.

" Edward . . . I . . . love . . . you." And my heart stopped beating and I knew I had saved Edward, but I had also killed him too. He had no life without me in it.
