His Last Word

Dean couldn't believe how crazily everything was spiraling out of control. This was not how it was supposed to be. This wasn't what he was expecting. It had all gone so wrong in such a short amount of time. He didn't know who to save or where to start.

Sam was missing. Castiel had turned into some inexscusable evil. Dean was stuck in between both problems, having to fix both of them. He was tired of doing this. But he loved both his brother and the angel-now-turned-leviathan. No matter what happened to either of them, Dean knew that he would always love them. Especially Castiel.

There was chemistry from the start, no doubt. Dean knew that for a fact. But through the years, things had gotten tangled and confused between him and Cas. They kissed behind closed doors. They held hands when nobody was looking. Their relationship had been secret, and neither of them really minded it. The night Cas went rogue crushed Dean more than he'd ever imagined. His boyfriend was gone, claiming he was God and going on a wild killing spree rampage. He fought for a way to save him.

When Dean found an opening to save Castiel, he was taking it no questions asked. He begged Sam and Bobby for help and both of them knew right then there was a reason besides friendship. They couldn't say no.

Dean's heart broke as Cas apologized to him. Saying he had regret and admitting his wrong. But they were in front of Bobby and Sam. He couldn't say what he wanted to. So he acted like it didn't matter to him. Castiel knew better, though and Dean knew that. He took comfort in knowing that they had their own secret messaging system so they knew what the other meant. It came in handy a lot.

As the door opened and Cas was preparing himself for the unpleasent event about to unfold, Dean's heart swelled when he turned to him and said "I'm sorry, Dean." He knew that Cas was telling him "I love you." He wanted so much to say it back. He should have.

Because that was the last sentence Castiel the angel spoke to his boyfriend, Dean the hunter. "Dean" had been his last caring, loving word to his boyfriend. God, how he should have said something back.

God only knows when he'd ever get the chance to say it again.
