It was a dreary day, gray skies and cold winds. The morning had started out cold and windy and the rain had started to fall in round, fat droplets soon after lunch. The grass in the cemetery was soft under Danny's feet, the damp foliage yielding under his harsh steps. The rain had slowed to a drizzle, falling lightly on Danny's hair and spotting his glasses. His stride was long and quick and determined, but he slowed as he neared his destination.

The gray stone shone from the rain, the drops reflecting tiny images of Danny in the hundreds of droplets. The words carved into the stone were stark with shadow, dark against the light gray of the gravestone.

"Hey big brother," Danny whispered, setting his hand on the top of the stone. "Happy Birthday." He took a deep breath. The rain started falling harder and the wind blew a little stronger. Danny's scarf whipped around him in the breeze and he had to slip his glasses off and put them in his jacket pocket. He wiped his hand across his face, ridding it of the water that had collected there.

"I miss you," Danny whispered so softly that the words were captured by the wind and scattered across the empty field of headstones. "I wish you were here. I need you." Danny's eyes closed and he lowered his head. He pulled his jacket closer to his body to block the growing chill.

"I have so much to tell you. I'm sorry I don't come around much anymore." Danny paused to take a breath. "I asked Lindsay to marry me. I bought a ring and everything." He paused again. His eyes traveled over the inscription on the stone. Louis Messer. 1975 - 2006. Son, brother, friend. "I wish you could be there man."

Danny let out a harsh breath. "I never know what to say when I come here," he said, forcing a laugh. His eyes started burning, tears slowly traveling down his cheeks. "I'm sorry Louie. I'm so sorry." Danny's head fell back, his face to the rapidly darkening sky. The tears were falling freely as he sucked in a deep breath. "I love you Lou."

Danny brought his head back down and ran a hand over the headstone once more before stepping back and turning away. His scarf whipped around him in the wind as he headed back to the vehicle holding his fiancé. He could see her at the steering wheel mouthing the words to a song he probably didn't know. He paused at the gate of the cemetery and glanced back to his brothers grave.

I love you.
