A/N: I found another little writing piece in my phone memos. It was a jumping off point that ended with this short little oneshot. Also, I don't know why I keep gravitating toward the 'Spiritual' genre. I'm not even sure that's what you would call this, but I filed Adronitis and Bare under that genre too. If you think there's a better genre for any of these, please let me know. They're kind of in limbo, genre-wise. *shrugs*
Disclaimer: I do not own these characters. I just manipulate them for my own writing purposes! Yay.
Matter
"Matter can't be created or destroyed. The same atoms that are here...have always been here, continually arranging and rearranging, changing form, time, and place, but never fading out. It's true for our stories too, Axel.
"Sometimes...sometimes we're strangers on a street, sharing an almost imperceptible but mutual glance. Sea green eyes on ocean blue. A crashing wave shared in one glance, before it is broken, washing out with the tide, boots clicking against the pavement as we wade off in our separate ways.
"Other times, we're classmates. We bump shoulders by accident and I look up at you with narrowed eyes. I look back down with burning cheeks, suddenly petrified by how tall and...tattooed...you are. Amazonian. You smile, picking up the pen that has fallen from my grasp. I pick up my jaw from the floor.
"Once, we collided in a blustery explosion, scattering shrapnel irreparably in our wake. Heated words with too much force. Stupid, impulsive things said in the heat of the moment. I left, sealing both of our fates. You smashed every blue-eyed Christmas angel you set your eyes on after that, sometimes lighting them aflame and watching until every ember gave way to ash and black dust, letting it fall through your fingers the way I fell through yours.
"Most times, we pack our stuff and move to California. Once we both blurted out 'I do' at the same damn time. We get a place together—sometimes big, sometimes small. But we never care. We still find a way to curl up next to each other late at night, waking up in the morning in a mess of tangled limbs and murmured greetings. I don't know what catalyzes it….or how we've found each other that way so many times...but those are my favorite times.
"And here we are now. Axe—"
He takes Axel's hand, willing the light to come back into Axel's green eyes for just a few more moments. Roxas shakes his head, forcing his voice to steady, knowing he doesn't have time to say everything he needs to. His only solace is that maybe sometime, in some form or place, he will. He gives Axel's hand a final squeeze, feeling the faintest squeeze back.
"See you in the next life."
