Written shortly after the Passing came out, and I was annoyed by all the EllisxZoey references. I wasn't annoyed because it was a straight pairing, oh no, but how much it came out of near-nowhere and how creepystalker they made Ellis seem.
(Also this was written before I'd ever played the first game, so I had no clue how to write Zoey)
Zoey's Gaydar
If there was one thing that Zoey was proud of herself for, it was her gaydar. Ever since her later years in high school, she had managed to accurately guess who in her classes was gay, and had only gotten it wrong two out of twenty-five times. She was less accurate about her bisexual friends, who had thrown her for a loop when they came out to her. She figured after that that she was more attuned to the gay guys, rather than the lesbians or bisexuals. She blamed the internet.
Which is why, upon the first sight of Nick and Ellis by the bridge, she immediately knew there was something between them. It could've just been her yaoi-loving mind working wonders, but the college student definitely had a gay vibe from Ellis (which is why she was confused when he started flirting with her). Nick, she decided, was bisexual, as he seemed like a bit of a womaniser, but also the sort that liked a bit of cock on the side. Or a lot of cock, she couldn't tell. He liked cock at least. Possibly married once, most likely divorced if so. Again, her yaoi mind was working full-steam again and she worked out that he'd gotten divorced because he'd either cheated on her with a man, or she didn't like that he liked men in the first place.
This was one reason why Zoey, the college student slash avid yaoi fangirl, automatically paired the two handsome men together the moment she saw them. Ellis was sweet, polite and cute to boot, while Nick was a sarcastic, brazen asshole. It seemed to be the context of at least half of the yaoi she had come across. A Beauty and the Beast couple, almost. While she waited with her fellow survivors for the other four to get the bridge lowered, her mind wandered to all the possibilities of how they could have met.
Zoey figured that it was probably a love/hate relationship when they first met. Ellis would've been very nice, possibly a little shy if he'd had a crush on Nick right away, while the older man would've obviously still been his usual asshole self at all times. That had probably changed a little as time went on, with Nick seeing how competent Ellis was (if the fact he was driving a race-car through a horde of zombies was anything to go by), and so the harsh exterior would melt a little bit and Ellis would see a different side to the guy.
When they returned to fill up the generator, Zoey took careful note about how they fought around each other, having not been able to see it as they made their way around. She kept an eye on the two, seeing how Nick would be the first one to shove one of those head-humping things off of Ellis, while Ellis would hand whatever pills or shots he found to Nick first, if he needed them. When a horde attacked, they kept back-to-back, so as the other wouldn't be pounced unexpectedly. Sure, they did very similar things for the other two. Coach and Rochelle, wasn't it? But it wasn't the same. There was... something more to Nick and Ellis' interactions.
The bridge was lowered pretty quickly, and Ellis immediately ran to their beloved car, screaming about how much he'd missed it, with Nick close on his heels. They all yelled goodbyes, wished good lucks, and went their seperate ways faster than Zoey could finish thinking about what they'd look like shirtless and kissing.
"Man, that guy was such an asshole." Francis said, once the car had zoomed off into the distance.
"I dunno, I think he was alright." Zoey smiled to herself, "I kinda hope we meet again."
So she could bribe them to kiss for her, of course.
R+R for peelz
