AU alternate ending to The Fault in Out Stars. I own nothing, everything belongs to John Green, this is just a (sorta) fun 'what if' inspiration I had. It was kinda rushed but let me know what you think anyways.
Epilogue
So there Augustus Waters stood. In the middle of a grassy field surrounded by stones. He supposed most people would've called it a cemetery. He just thought of it as a gateway. He spent nearly every spare minute he had here now that she was gone. No. He couldn't say her name. If he did...
"Hazel Grace...do you know what you've done to me now? Waltzing out like that. Not very polite, leaving me like that..." He said brokenly to the air, working his ever-present cigarette to the other side of his mouth. Even 3 months later, just mentioning her name broke his heart all over again and pushed his sanity a little farther. Nothing was the same anymore, everyone had moved on.
Augustus sighed, he knew he only had a few minutes before Isaac started yelling for him from the car.
"Do you remember when we first met? At Isaac's stupid session? And I said I feared oblivion? Well, this is the oblivion I fear. The oblivion you've left me in my poor heart now that your gone. I never you thought you would be the first to go that was my job, dammit." He sighed, slipping his hands into his pockets to feel what he had brought this time. The object felt cold, taunting him, accusing him with broken promises and lost dreams.
"You know, I wrote a last letter to Van Houten. Did you know that? I asked him to write a eulogy for you." Augustus snorted derisively, crouching next to her name.
"As you can no doubt guess he didn't do it. He did however, show up to your...your...your going away thing, apologizing for everything. Half drunk of course. Big shocker huh?" He ran his fingers through his hair.
"We had a quick repertoire about metaphors and he left for good thank God. That man is a blister. A great, big, retarded blister." He trailed off, knowing she understood him even though he was saying nothing. In the distance he could hear Isaac calling for him. Augustus sighed and stood up, bringing what he had brought out of his pocket.
"Okay..." He breathed out lovingly to the letters that formed her name, his lower lip wavering a little.
"You know, Hazel Grace, you were right about no one remembering us when we're gone. I suppose it's only fair no one remembers a little metaphor."
And those were Augustus' final, broken words as he brought the lighter up to his cigarette and walked away.
