Super Powers
"X-ray vision, obviously."
"You'd see bones, not underneath clothing."
"Fine. Invisibility."
"But it wouldn't extend to clothes. You'd have to be completely…oh right."
The Doctor scoffed upon overhearing his companions' game, yet still paused outside the doorway to listen.
"I'd absorb others' powers by touch," said Rose.
"You couldn't have any other skin contact," said Jack "Not even with…"
"Shhhhh!" Rose hissed. "The Doctor sort-of has powers. Wonder what he'd pick."
"Flying?"
"I think shapeshifting."
"Telekenesis—for repairs," said the Doctor from the doorway. "Also, the X-Men marathon's over."
His startled companions shrugged, nodded, and watched The Avengers instead.
Author's Note: As is usually my custom, the story title is also the title of a song. Check out "Super Powers" by Ookla the Mok.
I wrote this drabble for two reasons. The first was to see if I could do an exactly 100 word story. I managed it, but I learned that it is not an easy task.
The second reason was to use this little story as a postcard to let readers know I am back. Below is a statement from my profile, which includes the reason for my absence and my plan going forward:
Early in June 2014, I started the process of moving from one home to another. I knew this would keep me busy till mid July and announced that updates would likely be slow and not predictable. But I promised, that barring any tragedy, I would finish what I started. Unfortunately, tragedy quite literally struck. In late June, my best friend and sister-by-heart left life far too early. She left a hole in my heart that cannot be completely filled by anything else, and I found the quiet times when I would normally write consumed by this terrible reality. I couldn't daydream in the Whoniverse during dull moments (which is a big part of my pre-writing process) because of grief. I couldn't even log on here. But she was my muse, inspiration, and one of the two people who made me the writer I am today. She would want me to write. So though it took a while, I have done my best to start writing again in her honor.
To my friend (nicknamed Captain Kate) thank you for who you made me to be. "I have been - and always shall be - your friend." Going forward, I will try to subtly include a nod to her in each of my stories.
Last week I re-read my stories, made minor adjustments and edits, and posted the revisions. That means I am once again familiar with the characters and their stories. That also means I am writing again. The first story to be updated will be As Time Goes By. Then I will switch and update The Way We Were. Calendar Girl may stay on the backburner for a bit just because the chapters are longer and more like stand-alone episodes. My hope is to have a chapter of As Time Goes By up within a few days of this notice. (8/10/14)
It feels good to be back. I have missed my own personal corner of the Whoniverse.
