"Hey Garnet, can I ask a question?"

The leader of the gems looked up at her young ward from where she sat, smiling to herself as she knew what Steven was going to ask. The young boy took her smile as a yes and quickly left the T.V. to join her on the couch, sitting on the lap of the bigger gem warrior.

"When you saw Connie and I for the first time were you smiling that big because you knew we were good?"

That wasn't the exact question Garnet thought he was going to ask. She knew it would have to do with fusion, but she wasn't expecting him to ask about Connie and him. She gave Steven a hug from behind, wrapping her strong arms around him before answering.

"I was smiling for many reasons. Yes, Connie and you are a good fusion, one of the best I have seen. Fusions that look like that are rare, most of the time there is some form of disconnect that makes malformations in the body, such as too many arms or legs."

"Like how Opal has normal legs and four arms?" Steven butted in and Garnet gave a short laugh before nodding her head.

"Exactly like that. But you, you were an amazing fusion, an amazing experience." He shifted around so he could smile up at the older gem before a slight frown fell on his face.

"What about Lapis? What will happen to her?" It was Garnet's turn to frown. She knew that Steven cared about the dark blue gem, but Jasper was with her and that was a big worry for the blue and red fusion.

"I don't know. I'm still looking and when I find them, or just her and I will let you know." That seemed to be enough to calm the boy and he nodded before starting to play with Garnet's hands, running over the smooth stones with his fingers. They sat in the quiet for a bit, the only sounds those of the waves and birds outside.

"Hey Garnet, how did you know just what to say when I first fused? Did your future vision tell you?"

There was another moment of quiet between the two as Garnet remembered her words to Stevonnie, of how they were an experience, not just one person or two people.

"No Steven, your…your mother said it to me long ago." Only the sounds of the ocean filled the air again as Steven continued to gently touch the sapphire and ruby in the hands of Garnet.

"Mom was right. Can…can you tell me more about Ruby and Sapphire and how you guys met?" Steven looked up at her hopefully, stars in his eyes as he stared at her. Garnet couldn't help but laugh, ruffling his hair before setting him down on the ground and standing up.

"Another day. Your birthday will be here soon enough and you can ask a lot of questions then." She poked his nose and made him laugh, covering up the sigh he was going to let out. Once he finished laughing he looked at her seriously, holding a hand out to her.

"Shake to promise that you will." With a smile she kneeled down and shook his hand before Steven declared he wanted to go and get 'the bits' and wanted to know if Garnet was going to go with him. She nodded her head and soon the pair was walking toward town, the conversation about fusion pushed away for the time being.
