"Hey twinkletoes…" Toph spoke, voice wavering an almost unnoticeable amount.
"Yeah, Toph?" Aang and his blind friend were lying on a hill looking, or in the case of one of them, not looking, at the stars. The two had decided to spend a little time outside the temple, leaving the rest of the crew to sleep.
"What do you think about love?" Aang was surprised at this uncharacteristic question.
"W-well…I don't really know"
"I mean, what do you think it means? To be in love?" Toph turned her head to face him, her blank eyes staring past him.
"I think…" Aang stopped to think. "I think it's different for each person."
Silence followed for several moments as the two comrades lay in thought.
"Have you ever been in love?" Again, with the odd questions. Aang shifted uncomfortably, then paused thoughtfully.
"Yeah, I think I am in love." Aang stared up at the stars.
"How do you know?" Toph flipped on her side, totally facing the boy, seemingly peering curiously at him.
"I just… I just feel it." Toph let out an exasperated puff of air at that response.
"Gee thanks, twinkletoes. That really helps."
"No, no…" Aang tried to redeem himself. "Just, when I look at her…I feel like I have never felt before. It's like the world spins faster, and everything…"
"Just fits?" Toph whispered. Aang turned to face the girl.
"Yeah. Exactly."
A couple more minutes of silence followed, and the two rolled to face the open sky again. Toph cleared her throat.
"I think I am in love too." She spoke quietly, but clearly.
Aang nodded.
"A-and…" Toph waivered... "I think I'm scared." There was no shame in her uncharacteristically soft voice. Just confusion.
"Me too." Aang reached over to grab the girl's hand and gave it a squeeze as he grinned at her.
"Me too."
