I'm trying to get back into One Piece, really, but there are other shows dragging me away (coughcoughheroescough) but I just got this sudden idea for no reason. The oddest thing is, I don't even like Ussop. Or Kaya. It's the only canon pairing, though, so it must be something.
------
Usopp is reckless; he is immature, and his credibility is nearly nonexistent. But in spite of these dominating traits he can also be very caring, dedicated, and honest. Only, most of the people he had ever known only knew his more negative traits. He doesn't mind.
He is proud. He is proud because his father is a pirate following the Jolly Roger, and he works hard everyday hoping to become even a fraction of the great man his father is.
He is also proud because he has his stories. Storytelling is one of his greatest talents, and it passes the time in the small village. It also makes Kaya feel better; Usopp is concerned about her health and wants to make her feel better. He isn't a doctor, but he can keep her spirits high.
But he does tell tall tales. He tells lies, like that he commands eighty thousand men or he is the strongest pirate in the East Blue. But as time goes on he holds on to his lies and convinces himself that these will be true. He longs to get off the small island to become a great captain.
The crew he does have believes him. Kaya believes him too. But it is her butler, Klahadore, who drags his lies into the light, and rips his dreams apart.
"Your life is a lie. Do not come back here." But he does go back, because Kaya is there.
He throws a pebble at her window. She greets him kindly, looking ill as ever but so happy. He climbs the tree outside her window. And then he starts to tell her more stories, more lies. Hours later the sun starts to set. He has to go, but Kaya reaches out and grabs his wrist. She leans so far out the window she nearly falls, but Usopp is fast and catches her. She brings her head up and kisses him. Her lips are soft and slightly bitter from her medicines.
He tells lies, he lives lies, that Klahadore may say, but Usopp knows that no matter what happens this will always be true.
