A/N: Actually my first OUAT fic, popped into my head at work today, demanding to be written. So here it is for sharing. More than likely just a one shot. Enjoy. (Oh yeah, it's not really been edited, so all mistakes are my own)
Disclaimer: Not mine, but I wouldn't mind spending some time with them...
Emma stood in the snow outside the diner, watching as the flakes fell coating the small town. She loved this time of night, it was like the whole town had decided it was time to close up for the evening. Families were home, businesses were closed, and the whole world was silent. Mostly.
"Evening Sheriff," Rudy smiled, stepping out of Granny's, locking the door behind her. "I'm surprised to see you out here tonight."
Emma smiled, "Well, what can I say? Sometimes I just enjoy a quiet walk around the town."
Ruby looked around, "Mind if I join you?" Emma shook her head, "not at all." Playfully the sheriff took the waitresses arm in her own, guiding her as they slowly walked the snow covered streets. Stopping beneath a street light, they enjoyed the silent tableau before them. Ruby leaned against the blonde, seeking some extra warmth, "When I was younger I used to sneak out under the fool moon, just to walk the streets. It felt like I was the only one in town, and I love that feeling. The break from everyone, just being alone."
Emma nodded, slipping her arm around Ruby's waist, pulling her closer. "I've always been alone, all those years in the foster system. I was always alone."
"That sounds awfully lonely," Ruby turned looking sadly at the woman next to her.
"It was," Emma paused, thinking, "it still is."
Ruby turned to fully face the other woman, she couldn't help but be caught off guard by the unexpected flash of pain and loss in the blonde's eyes. "You're not alone Emma, not anymore."
With a shrug of her shoulders, Emma replied, "I know. I've got Henry- but he's still Regina's kid, and Mary Margaret is a great friend, and all. I mean she's the only one I've ever really had…"
Her companion lets out a little chuckle, "That's not what I meant Emma." Ruby smiles over Emma's confusion, then leans closer, her breath mixing with Emma's, "I meant this. She leans in slowly, giving the blonde a chance to back out, before pressing their lips together. Emma barely hesitated before pressing herself into the kiss and against Ruby. It's not much, barely a meeting of lips, but the connection is strong and heartfelt, sending the tiniest hints of sparks through both women.
Pulling back, Emma's eyes slide open, taking in the beauty before her, "Wow." Ruby just smiles back, lightly stroking Emma's cheek with her fingertips, grinning as Emma leans into the touch, "Maybe I'm not as alone as I thought."
Ruby chuckled, sliding her hand down Emma's arm, entwining their fingers, "Maybe not.'
Together they walked through the snow, hand in hand. Alone and together.
