The Last Goodbye

-

Snape looked up by the knock on his door. He frowned, wondering who would visit him. No one ever came here apart from… her, but she hadn't been there for years. Not since she started dating the largest prick in the world.

He rose from his armchair and made his way towards the front door. He unlocked the door.

,,Hi.''

He stared in shock at the woman and the infant in her arms.

,,Lily?''

Lily stared at her feet, not wanting to look her old friend in the eyes.

To say they had parted on bad terms, would have been an understatement.

,,Can I come in?'' she asked softly.

Speechless, Snape let her in. He suddenly realised the house was a mess. Book and ingredients lay strewn around. It was no proper place for a lady such as her.

,,Can I offer you anything?'' he asked awkwardly.

The little boy in her arms reached towards him and he found himself studying a pair of green eyes. The boy had taken his eyes after his mother.

Lily smiled at the boy's childish trust. ,,His name is Harry.''

,,Lil… Mrs Potter,'' he said. ,,Might I ask what you are doing here?''

He saw her breathe in sharply. She removed a couple of books from a chair and sat down.

,,You can call me Lily if you want,'' she said, gently stroking Harry's hair.

Snape felt a sudden burning in his chest. A dream long forgotten swept to the surface again. He forced the pictures away.

,,Severus,'' she said softly. Her voice had always said his name in a special way. ,,I'm sorry for how we parted.''

,,I am, too,'' he said.

,,I know you joined the Death Easters.''

Snape couldn't help but flinch. He fell into the chair beside her and she slowly took his hand.

,,I need to know that you wont hurt my son. I couldn't live if something happened to him,'' she told him. ,,I know I have no right and I feel bloody ridiculous. It's just… I don't think I will survive.''

He looked at her in horror.

,,Just promise me, Severus. Promise me you will take care of my son. Not James' son. My son.''

,,I promise.'' The words were out of his mouth before he could stop them. But he didn't regret them.

,,Thank you.''

He watched Lily Evans, or Lily Potter, walk out of his life for what felt like the last time.
