I'm doing a 30 day drabble challange and I decided to post this entry on here.
Jade sat on the swing in the front porch. She leaned back and rested one hand on her abdomen and used the other to pet the dog that lay to her right. He rested his head on his paws and enjoyed her affections. Jade looked down at him and smiled. He was old. He looked tired and his brown hair was peppered with gray. But he looked content. She looked back at the fading sun.
She felt content too. It had taken her some time to get there, but she had done it. Her loyal companion had helped her get through it. He understood her. He understood the giant gap that was in her heart, because it was in his too. They had both lost her. Cat had owned him, he was hers, and she had owned Jade's heart, she was hers.
When she was gone they had been left alone, lost, broken. But they found comfort in each other's loneliness. Somehow, they made it through.
Now they sat on that old porch swing, in that old house, with gray in their hair, watching the sun set. They were both content to be with their perpetual companion and to know it wouldn't be long before they were reunited with Cat.
