Blue Flame

Chapter 1: The Forgetful Valley

After few months have passed, the once peaceful valley was again disturbed as the Mother of Faces passed by it. The spirit did her stroll before finally noticing that she was not alone in the valley. Among the living creatures around them, a human have mixed in as if waiting for something.

The spirit readily passed by the human's location and found a familiar face. It was one of the Avatar's companion, the daughter of the woman she once had given a face before.

The Mother of Faces stopped in front of her and promptly said,

"I am the Mother of Faces, I know you know what I am capable, child. The whispers of the nature had told me that you have been waiting for my arrival. What is it that you seek from me?"

"I want you to make me forget..."The princess of the Fire Nation whispered with a hoarse voice. She was expressionless and had only the energy to sit up, leaning on a tree trunk.

Even if it was a powerful spirit towering over her, Azula didn't show or felt a shred of fear. She finally became numb from everything she had been feeling, not caring anymore if she will live or die tomorrow.

During her time waiting in the valley, she had relived her past. All the guilt, the shame, and the failure flashed through her mind. The loneliness, the sadness, and the anger she once had from the betrayals, the defeats she experience, and the abandonment, swallowed her heart.

These went on repeat until her heart went heavy and numb while her mind break itself all over every day and night even in her dreams. She screamed, cried, and wept but nothing really helps her.

Nonetheless, through all that, Azula is not a quitter. If she can, she'd rather forget everything rather than die. She had survived living in the valley for months even in winter. Hunting animals, drinking in lakes, sleeping in nearby caves just for the chance of a painless second life.

Being alone can do that to an already tortured soul.

The spirit contemplated silently as she watched that child look at her with blank and dark half-opened gold eyes.

"I see, child. You look like you have suffered enough. Well then, I shall grant you mercy. Come-" The Mother of Faces was cut off when the clouds, unnaturally fast, gathered above them and produced a blinding lightning that strike their location.

A blue dragon had come down from that lightning. With its majestic scaled body surrounded by powerful lightning and sharp emerald green eyes, the long body of the dragon went between the Mother of Faces and the only human there.

"Hmmm... This is certainly surprising. The Azure Dragon King, Ao Guang. What is your business here?" The Mother of Faces inquired her fellow spirit.

"Please excuse my rudeness, Mother of Faces. My business is with this human child so can I please ask you to leave her to me and continue your walk?" The voice of the dragon that can be likened to a wise old man came from the jaws of the spirit as he said this.

"Of course. If I am right, this must be connected to those events. So I will give way for you. Let me take my leave. Goodbye Azure Dragon. Goodbye Child, may we not have the fortune to meet again."

The Mother of Faces stated to the two beings in front of her. Azula all but crawled towards the female spirit.

"No! Don't go! I need your help! I need to forget! I need that to live!" Azula shouted desperately towards the Mother of Faces who all but disappeared in the depths of the valley. She pleaded but the spirit didn't come back.

Her last chance! She screamed with her hoarse voice full of anguish. "This...This is all your fault! How dare you obstruct me, you lizard!" Azula yelled at the azure dragon who was watching her. She shakenly stood up and threw full force of lightning towards the dragon.

The dragon king all but stared at the energy coming towards him and made it explode by filling it with more energy its form can take. The force made Azula flew and hit the tree that she was earlier sitting on.

"Tsk. Tsk. You seem to forget your place, Human. You are in front of a spirit king and bowing should your first action be." The dragon placed its claws in front of Azula who was still laying on the earth because of the invisible force the dragon was placing on her and also because of her weakened body.

"...What... do you... want from me...?" Azula muttered as she looked up from the ground. Ao Guang was intrigued that she could still speak and look up at him under that amount of force.

"I want you to finally fulfill your destiny, Child of the Blue Flame." The dragon answered her in all seriousness as he eased the gravity around her letting Azula sit but what he responded to her question lead to Azula broken laughs hollowly.

"Funny you say that. I can't follow it anymore. Zuko is stole my destiny. He is now the Fire Lord so it's better that you should go to him with your business rather than me. I am only a monster that everyone hates." Azula growled with bitterness in her voice.

"You are a fool, child. You don't determine your destiny, only the fates do. Being the Fire Lord was never your destiny. It is not what your gifts were given for." Ao Guang told Azula who can't help but listen to the spirit.

"Follow my guidance, Child. For you to fulfill your destiny, you must travel all over the four nations." The Azure Dragon ordered her but that made her scowl.

"You mean like the avatar did?"Azula muttered in disgust. She suddenly had the urge to burn everything.

"Yes, that is right. On your travels, you will find the redemption that you are seeking while also fulfilling your mission. You are tasked to hunt the demons that escaped from the spirit world."

"Why can't the avatar just do this? He is the almighty bridge of the spirit world. Or Zuko, the other Almighty Fire Lord?" Azula stately mocked while crossing her arms.

"The avatar had already received another mission from the other spirits. Both had already followed the path of their destiny. They had a role to fulfill in the following happenings as do you." Ao Guang disclosed to her who's frowned deepened.

"But why dump this on me? I am just a lunatic as everybody said so." Azula asked with a bite on her tone.

"This has already been predetermined before your birth by the fates. Only they know why." Ao Guang explained.

"Now child of Blue Flame. Are you willing to follow your destiny or are you only just going to wander around until it haunts you and everything is already too late to salvage?"

Azula just looked back at the dragon's emerald green eyes with her gold ones. She contemplated silently for a few minutes before sighing loudly.

"Do I look like I have a choice in this? You just practically shoved in my face that I have none." Azula grumbled but there was a light in her eyes unlike before. She was a soldier, a warrior that liked to face challenges before she had went to tip toe dancing in the boundary of sane and insane.

"Wise choice, Child." the dragon king nodded.

"So what do I have to do first, O great Dragon King?" the princess mocked the spirit with a small smirk.

"First, you have to belong to my kin as those had before you." The azure dragon pointed one of his sharp claws near Azula's left forehead. Without warning he dragged down his claw deep sinking in Azula's skin at her forehead then down passing even through her eyes to her left cheek.

Azula screamed out in pain and clutched her left eye while cursing the dragon king. From behind her bloodied hands, light was bursting through and the pain spread throughout her body making her writhe in the ground in torture.

The pain was so great that she was starting to lose consciousness already though not before she heard the dragon talk.

"My essence and power will seep through that wound and make you my kin if you can survive it. Being my kin, you will find blue flames that act as guide in your travels. I also left some gifts that might be useful to you, child. I bid you luck in your journey."

Azula can only hear him but finally the darkness took over her.
