"Should I stay or should I go?"

It was a bright morning out in the late summer, early fall of Hawkins with one Will Byers waking up excited for the day he'd been waiting for weeks for.

Today was the first day of high school and Will was getting ready the only way he knew how, to his favourite song, should I stay or should I go.

...

"Son of a bitch!" Dustin yelled as he rummaged through his mother's kitchen looking for his signature ball cap.

"Honey what's going on?" Dustin's mother said also yelling trying to grasp her head over what her rowdy son was doing.

"I'm looking for my hat, I've been searching for ten minutes now!" Dustin yelled back as he was trying to find some way to rip the sink from the counter to get a look in there.

"Well why didn't you say something I gave it a wash, it's in the dryer!" Mrs. Henderson yelled as she went back to her seat, frustrated by the stubbornness of her son.

"Aha! Got it!" Dustin exclaimed as he ripped out his signature hat that he's had since he could remember.

"Alright Dusty have a good day!" She yelled to Dustin as he ran out the door to his ride, which he was late for, given by none other than Steve Harrington.

"God dude about time! Now let's go get the others." Steve said as he shifted his car into gear and drove off with Dustin not even having time to get his seatbelt on.

...

"Lucas, your ride is here!" Mr. Sinclair hollered up the stairs to his son Lucas, who had woken up late and didn't even have time to eat breakfast and was still getting his clothes on.

"Shit, shit, shit." Lucas said as he ran down the stairs, nearly tripping over the very first step.

"Bye mom! Bye dad!" Lucas said as he jumped down the remaining flight of stairs and ran out the door to Steve's car.

"God is everyone going to be late today? You'd think for the first day of high school you kids would be ready..." Steve said as he pulled away from the Sinclair's residence and drove off to their next stop.

...

"Oh honey! You look so handsome!" Mrs. Wheeler said as she took yet another photo with her Polaroid camera.

"Come on mom, can I just go now?" Mike said just wanting to get out of the house now

"Just one more and... there we go. That's the final one." Mrs. Wheeler taking it her hands watching it slowly the image come into view.

"Oh honey... I can't believe this is your first day of high school... you kids are growing up so fast..." Mrs. Wheeler trailed off, tears welling up in her eyes.

"Oh mom..." Mike said as he went over and hugged her knowing she must have been seriously torn up by seeing her son leaving and becoming more of a man.

"Michael, your ride is here!" Mr. Wheeler yelled over from his lazy boy, not even bothering to get up and say goodbye.

"Sorry mom, I have to go!" Mike yelled as he tore away from the grip of his mom and ran out to Steve's car which was parked in his drive way.

"God at least one of you guys can be somewhat on time." Steve said as he pulled out of the driveway and drove off to their final spot.

...

"So ya' gotta let me now, should I stay or should I go."

As the song finished Will pulled out the tape from his Walkman Hopper had got him for his birthday. Ever since the death of Bob, Joyce and Hopper has gotten quite close and moved in with each other.

But with that Will walked out the door to Steve's car, excited for the day ahead of everyone.

"Alright are we good to go?" Steve said looking around his cramped car.

"No we've still got one more person we're waiting on." Mike blurted our before Steve even had a chance to touch the shift stick.

"What? Who? Are we giving Jonathan a ride as well?" Steve asked not knowing the situation.

"We never told him did we?" Dustin said as turned around to face the rest of the party.

"No I don't think we ever did." Will said as he joined in on the conversation.

"How did we end up never telling Steve?" Lucas said making it a unison of all four boys talking at once.

"Ok shut up! I don't understand who were waiting for." Steve said calling the group down.

"Her." Mike said as he pointed out his window to the Byers-Hopper house. His eyes glazing over after seeing who was on the porch.

Standing on the porch was me, Jane Eleven Hopper or as I like to be called, El. I stood there in bright floral dress Nancy had helped me pick out. Without hesitation I walked over to Steve's car.

"Hello boys, hi Mike." I said to them as I squeezed into the tight back of the car, me and Mike ended up being pressed right against each other due to the four of us having to sit in the back.

"Oh, uh hi, El." Mike said finally snapping out of his trance a few seconds after I said hi to him.

"Not very sleep much?" I asked him. Over the year of staying with Hopper and Joyce they had gotten me Mr. Clarke to tutor me and get me to grade level in the subjects so that I could attend high school with the boys. But my speaking had only improved slightly and he had said it might take upwards of another two years before I could speak normally, but I can write nearly at college level so that made up for it.

"Uh, uh yeah I just didn't get enough sleep. That's all." Mike said

I could tell Mike was lying, his eyebrow always twitched when he lied, but I didn't want to press him now with everyone around so I payed off him... for now.

"Mike get more sleep." I said.

Taken aback by my sudden demand Mike quickly turned towards me.

"Don't worry I will." He said to me. Whenever I asked Mike to do something he always did it without a second question. I always wondered why he did that for me and not anyone else, not even Will.

"So we're really not gonna talk about how nobody told me Eleven and Hopper we're living with Joyce and Will for a whole year." Steve said as they were approaching the school.

"We're sorry Steve it just never came up in a conversation." Dustin said. Feeling guilty that they forgot to inform Steve of such big information.

"Nah it's okay, I can understand she probably needed to lay low for a while, besides I've been quite busy myself." Steve said. He had been quite busy since we closed the gate that cold November evening. After taking care of the boys and... Max. He decided to start his own daycare business with the money he had earned while working though high school.

"Alright were here, now don't be little shits here, you're mature and I trust you guys." Steve said unlocking the doors to the car and letting everyone funnel out.

"Hey! Don't fuck with Mr. Freewall! He well give you detention the first chance he gets!" Steve yelled out to us.

"Don't worry we won't and thanks for the ride!" We all yelled back excited as ever for our first day.

Mike and I ended up falling behind the others as we were walking to the doors of the school and I had to ask him something.

"Mike, what is fuck?"

"Oh, that's just another swear word like shit and bitch, like we said try not to use it around adults." He said.

"But fuck can also mean-" Mike caught himself before he said it.

"You know you're probably not ready for that yet." He said to me, but I was ready, if I was ready for high school I was ready to know fuck.

"No, tell me." I told him not taking his no for an answer.

"Alright look come over to my house after school and I might tell you." Mike replied back.

"Fine."

With that me and Mike had to separate and head to their separate classes.

...

"God history is even worse in high school." I thought to myself, Michael Wheeler. I was just about ready to shoot myself when a knock came on the door and in popped El.

"Mike is need for office." She said as she looked over to me. I looked over to my teacher, Mrs. Kowalski and she nodded.

"You may go, Michael." She said. Right then I quickly grabbed my things, and ran out the door.

"Hey El, why do I need to-" I was cutoff when I closed the door as El collapsed into a hug and started sobbing into my chest.

"Woah, woah, woah what's wrong El?" I said as I looked down at her face, her mascara which Nancy had taught her how to do was running now.

"Can we go somewhere private." She said tears starting to stream down her face.

"Of course, let's head out back into the woods." I said to her as she started to break down.

As we arrived I sat her down under a tree and I sat next to her. I also gave her my sweater because she had started to shiver.

"Now El, what's wrong?" I asked trying to figure out her situation.

"I- I- I just missed you." Even I could tell El was lying.

"El." I said as I raised her chin to look into my eyes.

"Friends don't lie." I said.

"...Everyone last three period have made fun of my talking." She said, her eyes beginning to well up again.

"Oh El, it's okay." I said as I pulled her close and rapped my arms around her.

I loved the feeling of holding El in my arms, her soft skin was a pleasure and the fabric of her clothed were always soft.

"Mike?"

"Yes El?"

"Why were you staring at me when I got in car." She asked.

"Because I said I was-"

"Friends don't lie." She said back to me. Dammit! She knew I was lying and I had no other option but to tell the truth.

"...it's because I couldn't believe how pretty you were this morning." I cringed, not knowing how this was going to end, but El giggled.

"That's what I hope you said." She said, her grammar wasn't great but I was always able to understand her.

"Mike?"

"Yes El?"

"I still want to know fuck."

"Alright I guess you deserve to know, fuck is another way of saying having sex."

"Sex? What is sex?"

"Joyce, or Hopper, or Mr. Clarke never said anything about it?" I asked scared that I'd have to explain sex to the girl I loved right in front me.

"No."

"Well ok, so um sex is... sex is when a man puts his... parts into a girls parts and it feels good. But you don't do it with just anyone, you do it with someone you really, really like... someone you love." I told her, that being the best explanation I could give without wanting to end my own life on the spot.

"Mike?"

"Yes, El?"

"I love you."

At this point my brain started to short circuit and I ended up stuttering for the next minute or so before I could pull my thoughts together.

"But El, you love me?"

"Yes."

"But why me? Why not anyone else?"

"Because you were kind, you gave me home, you gave me eggos." Hearing her say that made me smile, knowing it just wasn't eggos, but it was the experiences that we shared together that made her love me.

"El."

"Yes, Mike?"

"I love you too." Saying that I was still extremely scared she would reject me even though she already said she loved me. After I said that the only thing she did was looked up and flashed me one of her signature smiles.

*Ring*

"Damnit, the school bell, we should probably head back." I said as I began to get up but El pulled me back down.

"No Mike can we please stay here." She said looking at me and pouting knowing I couldn't say no to her.

"Alright I guess we can stay a bit longer, but we're gonna have hell when we get back from our teachers."

"Don't worry I will make them not mad... promise." With that we curled up next to each other and stared off into the cool, early fall day.

...

It was now after school, me and El eventually returned to the school just before the bell dismissed everyone for the day, she went and talked with Mrs. Kowalski, my history teacher and Mr. Crain, my fifth period, and my science teacher and cleared up where I was, getting me a clear card with them.

As the bell sounded me and El ended up heading out before the rest of the group to wait for Steve, all the mothers ended up pitching in and are paying for Steve to come and drive us.

As we waited I had pulled out a can of Pepsi I had bought earlier today and was taking a sip when El practically gave me a slap in the face with what she said.

"Mike, can we sex sometime?"

I thought my brain wasn't working before when she said she loved me but now my brain was completely hooped.

"Well, uh, see um..." I stuttered trying to think of an answer

"Hey guys!" Dustin had yelled over as him, Will and Lucas walked out from the school.

"Hey, why weren't you in fifth dude?" Lucas asked as I shared that class with him.

"Oh uh..." I said looking over to El, she was ready her usual line of, friends don't lie.

"I had to help out El. Some bully's were teasing her about her speech." I said, I looked over to El who was looking quite down again

"Hey don't worry, it's okay." Will said as he put his arm over her shoulder. Ever since El and Hopper moves in with the Byers El and Will had almost become something close to a brother and sister.

It was a good few minutes into waiting that we realized something, more so we realized something was missing.

"Have any of you guys seen max?" I said, immediately I noticed El's eyes flare, ever since she came back she had never taken a liking to max.

"I heard she came down with a really nasty bug, she might not be back for a week." Lucas said, he was dating her, so it made sense why he knew what was going on with her and we didn't.

"So I guess that counts her out for hanging out when we all get to my house." I said. We had all planned after the first day to converge in my basement and talk about what happened on our first days.

Just as I finished my sentence Steve finally pulled up to come and get us, fifteen minutes late.

"And you were ragging on us for being late this morning!" Dustin yelled as he crawled into the front seat.

"Hey man I have a business to run! Can't just come on a dime always to come pick you kids up." Steve said as he shifted his car into gear and drove off.

...

After we got to my place we all hung out for about an hour before people started leaving, Will had a doctors appointment, Dustin had to go watch his house, and Lucas had to go watch his sister. This left just me and El, alone in the basement.

"Mike?"

"Yes El."

"You never answer me." She meant to say answered me but I understood what she was saying, she wanted an answer to her question.

"Well El, sex... kids aren't supposed to have it. We aren't supposed to have it." I said.

"But Mike how am I supposed to show love to you?"

"El, love just isn't about sex, love is about caring for that person, being there for that person when you need them most and vice versa, it's about cuddling and kissing that person if they're feeling sad or happy, it's about giving your heart to them and their heart to you." I said, only just realizing how strongly I felt about the topic.

"Mike."

"Yes El?"

"You said you love me?"

"...I do, with all my heart."

"Does that make you boyfriend?"

"Only if you want me to be your boyfriend."

"Yes I do... Mr. Boyfriend." El said with a smile.

"Well I'm lucky then. I get to call Jane Eleven Hopper... Mrs. Girlfriend." I said smiling back at her.

"Mike what was that one thing you said?"

"Which one?"

"The thing we did in the woods, behind school."

"You mean cuddling?"

"Yes that, can we do that again?"

"Of course." And so I snuggled up to El and within a few minutes she had fallen asleep, she still had a few hours before Mrs. Byers would come by and pick her up, so I let her sleep and might I say for a first day, even though El didn't have the greatest time, I wouldn't want this day to end any other way, because now I have the greatest girl in the world.

Hopkins very own, Jane Eleven Hopper.
