Outside of Truth
The cabin seemed to be closing in around Captain Jack Sparrow. For a man usually so calm, he had an uneasy feeling in his stomach. He had the idea that it was probably the presence of Will Turner with his compass that was bothering him so much, but he couldn't exactly admit that at the moment. Will didn't need to be given any more leverage.
Will had a look of triumph on his face. He was the very picture of a desperate man ready for the answers he was seeking. His eyes gleamed with something close to wickedness, yet pain lurked just underneath. He wanted to know how he had lost Elizabeth.
"Is this how a friend repays another?" Will asked. His voice was accusing.
Jack smirked trying to regain a bit of authority. He didn't like to be the one questioned. "I wasn't aware we were friends."
Will grinned at this, almost laughing at himself. "I wanted you to protect Elizabeth. Did what I ask mean nothing?" Will looked down at the table for a moment. "You took her, Jack."
Jack didn't answer. He was trying to formulate a plan, trying to figure out the best thing to say that could turn the tides. It was proving very difficult for him this time. Will took the silence to mean a no.
"I was searching for my father, trying to free him." Will's voice was rising. "He was being tortured, punished for helping you."
"Technically, Bootstrap never actually…" Jack began.
"He stood up for you." Will paused, a forlorn look on his tired face. "I was already losing her, Jack. You were the final cut…"
Jack had to admit that it was partially true. Elizabeth had been changing, becoming more independent, a stronger women. She was the very picture of what Jack needed, and he had seized the opportunity that Will's absence provided for him. He had taken Elizabeth, yet Elizabeth wanted to be taken.
She wanted freedom and longed to act selfishly. She didn't want to be tied down in a regular life, as she had once believed. He had helped her to see that. Jack couldn't help that Will was only a passing fancy for her, as Norrington had been. Will could never satisfy her taste for freedom.
"I am truly sorry for you loss, William." Jack gave a half-grin. He wasn't going to bend to Will. "But you seem not to notice that your once bonny lass has turned pirate herself, which means she is completely capable of doing whatever her onesy desires."
"And I suppose she desires you?" Will smirked at this. "Does she Jack? Or do you desire her?"
Jack didn't answer, and Will pulled the compass from his belt. "What do you want most?" Will opened the compass and outstretched his hand to Jack.
Jack made no move to take the compass. He was feeling trapped again and could see no way out. His fingers twitched for his sword before he realized he didn't have it. Will hadn't given him the privilege of keeping it for this meeting. Finally, with a look of contempt, he took the compass and watched the needle spin, finally stopping north.
Will looked at the compass before stepping quickly out of the cabin. His heart fell as one glance northward brought Elizabeth into his sight gazing out to sea, her hair blowing in the salty wind.
