I Promise You

"I can hear you, you know that right?"

"Then why did you let me stand here for ten minutes in silence?" She pulled herself from where she'd been leaning in the doorway, just watching him drink.

"Curiosity mainly. Wondered how long it'd take for you to say whatever it is you came here to say." He didn't bother turning around from his spot on the couch to look at her, he knew within moments she'd be beside him. "I got bored of waiting."

"What did you want me to forget?" She cautiously made her way to the couch, standing by the armrest.

He remained focused on the flickering flames in front of him, "I don't know what you're talking about Elena." He knew this day would come eventually.

"You returned my necklace to me. But something happened and you compelled me to forget. What happened?"

"What makes you so sure it was me?" Swallowing the last of his whiskey, he manoeuvred around her to pour another, holding up a glass as if to offer one to her.

She shook her head but followed him, "He hasn't said anything but I know it wasn't Stefan. He looked surprised when he saw it on me." She paused for a moment, remembering the split second of surprise on her former boyfriend's face. "You're the only other person who knew how important this is to me. Who would have cared enough to return it to me."

"You got me." He shrugged, "I brought it back for you." He returned to his position on the couch, casually propping his feet up on the coffee table.

She sighed, frustrated by his lack of cooperation, not that she should have expected anything less. " You still haven't answered me Damon. What did you want me to forget?" She sat down on the table opposite him, practically begging him for an answer now.

"We just talked. It isn't important now Elena."

For a long moment neither spoke, their eyes burning into each other. So many words left unspoken.

She finally broke away and walked slowly to the front door. "I will remember. I promise you." The next sound he heard was the front door closing.

Now alone with his drink he breathed a sigh of relief, "I don't doubt it."
