To be honest: I have no idea what came over me. I was re-reading William Blake's "Tyger, tyger" and suddenly had this idea. I figured because Blake's poems play such an important role in The Mentalist, I might as well modify them a bit. This is the result. Let me know whether you like it!
Spider, spider, yes it might
crawl up the ceiling late at night.
But what mortal shoe or hand
will bring its life now to an end?
Lisbon let out a high-pitched scream when the dark spot in the corner of her hotel room suddenly moved. No! No, no, no, no, no! She was on the third floor, for Christ's sake! How could this thing have even come up here? Hastily, she jumped over towards the door and hit the light switch with an uncoordinated thlomp. Suddenly, the room was engulfed in complete darkness. Fuck! Wrong switch! Instead of turning the other light on, they were both out now.
Her heart skipped a beat. Teresa Lisbon could handle everything and anything - as long as it had a maximum of four legs. Okay... Minus rabid dogs and Patrick Jane, maybe. For the past years – decade, even! - she'd been dealing with rapists, murderers, and other evil creatures. She had followed them into creepy basements, abandoned warehouses and high-security prisons. But a big-ass spider in a dark hotel room in the middle of nowhere? This is where she drew the line!
Hesitatingly, the hit the wall with her open palm, terrified by the thought that the spider might have crawled over to the light switches by now. But no. That wasn't possible. Way too far. Right? When her fingers came into contact with the edge of both light switches, Teresa hastily retrieved her hand, intuitively looking at their – now illuminated – surroundings. Nothing. Phew! She took a deep breath. Everything was in control. The lights were on. And after all, it was only a spider, right? She could handle this! Gathering all her courage, Teresa turned towards the corner to face her very own demon.
The spider was gone.
Anyone interested in a little sequel where she runs off to Jane for help? Let me know :)
